Spooks me on the Braintrees stopping at the 12 marker on the up. Rolling past the mirror & ramp still doing 10-15 mph, looking for the 12 stop. No platform. Grass, rabbits, dead deer. Literally just a pole with a 12 Car placard.

Some trains routed around the back of Colchester via the Goods Lines and Platform 1. However this route is eight carriages maximum when stopping at Colchester.

Indeed since the resig we can now handle 8 cars via the DGL, but this is ruled by Rules & Regs for running passenger trains via Goods Lines, and obviously they cannot run signal to signal like they do on the ML, however Hauled sets when routed DGL do hang over the end, but there are instructions on how this is handled, crew advised before running via the DGL, and Station Staff also on site to prevent any possibilty of people trying to get out !
The problem trains were the 12 cars, they had to run bi-di, which is fine, but of course Up Road trains also wished to travel too !
The rail defect happened just at the wrong time, it was always going to be a logistical nightmare dealing with the evening peak !

Of course the tree plummeting onto the track north of Haughley was the icing on the cake !

Yes, now you said that, that was an option with 12 car trains, and then ferry Colchester passengers back, but that was deemed possibly nightmarish ! whilst annoucements would be made, and advertised at Liv St, the chances of PassCom operation after passing through Colchester was quite high !

Some 12 car trains also split at Colchester would it have been possible to arrive as a 12 split the train open doors on platform of first portion it then departs and the portion left behind shunts forward into the platform and opens the doors?

You are talking about an operational nightmare there with huge amounts of things that can go wrong. There were plans to slew the goods loops across to the L/E of plat 1, but was considered as a 'nice to have' rather than essential so got dropped with many other schemes when NR debt was transferred to the government.

The 18.18 from Liverpool St was a 0 car on this evening, cancelled.

The full remodelling scheme would have made maintenance of all the pointwork around Colchester less disruptive to services. It also included a route up main to platform 5. In the end only the goods road to platform 1 was done.

There were plans for massive alterations at Colchester. Along with what I've mentioned and what you have mentioned there were also plans to extend plats 5 & 6 to 12 car platforms. All were classed as 'nice to haves' and were canned.

Platform 6, 12 car would have been useful, but would have lost the 'Sudbury Sdg' however the alteration to allow access to P5 from the Up Main (and to Down Main) would have played havoc with the WTT, it would have meant moving a set of points back, and this would have prevented access to P4 and P5 at the same time.
When they slewed the Goods Line over to allow a longer train in P1 via the Goods, it would have been nice for it to allow a 12 car, but we were advised ot would have been too tight coming off the Goods Roads into P1

Apart from the 360 that sits in here overnight (for the Braintree cars) I can't think of anything else that uses it. Extra 12 car platform at the London end sounds more useful especially in disruption.
