Just read in Raiway Gazette that GE is to spin off its Locomotives and transportation division along with it getting out of the lighting business too. Questions that have to be asked now are
1) Who will be liable for warranty of the class 70's?
2) Which company is most likely to buy GE traction?

Class 70 liability will pass to whoever buys the traction business. There is no sense in GE keeping hold of any now-inappropriate liability.

I thought we were already short on suppliers for locomotives. With Vossloh and EMD (GM) now the only participants being able to build a complete locomotive (that I am aware of). Are there any more?

Off topic, but the amount of smoke those things emit when starting off baffles me. 66’s don’t appear to have the same issue, and I’d say some of the BR era locos emit less.

Bombardier have a TRAXX UK in their portfolio, which they offered for the GA and EC franchises.

Siemens? (Although they may not have anything that can be made to fit UK loading gauge, if that's what you meant).
GE build very large numbers of locos in the US, and IIRC are in the process of moving loco construction from old plants in the north-east to a new plant in the west (as EMD did a little while ago). Just as when GM sold EMD, it's likely the business will continue under new ownership.

More homework needed ...... lots of it. Vossloh is now Stadler, Siemens and Bombardier possibly to merge but still both significant manufacturers in their own right, then Alstom, Hitachi, Talgo, CAF, CRRC .....

DoSiemens and Alstom are going to merge, the arrangement with Bombardier and Siemens didn't work out in the end. And Vossloh still produce some shunting locomotives, it's Vossloh Rail Vehicles (Formerly Vossloh España) that has been sold to Stadler

I think GE has parted company with its new CEO and now anything in the air before this morning is unclear.

Their stock market price dived a third in a year, thats whats prompted these divisions being sold off. Mega corps like GE are now no longer in vogue, shareholders prefer you to do a few things very well and in bulk rather than have a massivley diverse product portfolio where some low margin businesses divert management attention and shareholder capital from the more lucrative ones.

It doesn't come as a surprise to see them selling off more divisions. I was made redundant when they got rid of Capital. Capital was highly profitable, but they wanted to exit from regulated businesses several years prior, and also reduce the overall business size to remove themselves from SIFI and fed monitoring due to the sheer size of business. Not sure if they've achieved that goal yet.

Thanks for correcting me - I should know better as I work for a major shareholder in Alstom!
