From BBC news:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-34771521

General Electric has won a $2.6bn (£1.7bn) contract from the Indian government to build a fleet of new trains for the country.

The US-based industrial company said it would supply India will 1,000 new diesel trains over the next 11 years.

Reckon this will be DMUs or loco hauled?

At those prices, perhaps we should order some GE diesel trains.

Serious question: Is £1.7M cheap for a diesel loco?

That's the average price (presumably with a damn large bulk-buy discount)....

Most of the locomotives will be built in India itself, so I'm guessing labour costs are lower than they would be if the locos were to be built in the UK or the USA.

Alstom today announced that they have won a contract to supply 800 electric locomotives, of which 795 will be built in India.

So are they talking about trains or locos?
I wish the media types would (a) learn to distinguish between the two, and then (b) challenge the [maybe deliberately] misleading PR emissions...

Anyone know the age of the average Indian train? Have they had much in the way of new / refurb trains over the last decade or two?

Little chance of (a) but re (b) the PR "emissions" in this case make it clear they're loco counts ...

I wonder if there's announcements on orders for carriages to come in the next few days?

Since GE/EMD and their customers in the US seem very reluctant to quote/discuss prices it's hard to know for sure, but a typical US freight diesel is probably in the 2M-3M USD range depending on configuration.

They are very complex pieces of machinery these days, stuffed full of sophisticated high-power electronics as well as all the mechanical, electrical and cooling equipment...

Possibly but I believe Indian Railways build a lot (actually possibly all) of their own loco hauled stock as they still have their own carriage works.

Thanks. That makes sense as the dollar price would be $2.6M each according to the OP...
