GCSE certificates from 1995

Hi all

Bit of a long shot, but I am starting as a GWR Apprentice Driver in August and they have asked for GCSE certificates to show that I have Maths and English.

Having passed 30 years ago, and never being asked for them (hence losing them/throwing them out), I was wondering if anyone knows who the examining board was for Maths in 1995?

Managed to get English from AQA but they didn't provide Maths unfortunately.

I don't mind doing it if necessary but would be nice not to!

I did mine in 1994 and the maths one says Southern Examining Group.

I did mine somewhat earlier, but there were something like seven or eight boards then, although there may have been a réduction later on. I would think that you will have to contact the educational establishment and find out who they used then. (I am not an expert.)

It could be any one of several exam boards. The best thing to do is contact your old school with what subjects you need the certificates for and what year you left and they should be able to tell you which exam board(s) were involved.

If AQA were unable to help, the only 2 boards remaining to contact appear to be Edexcel and OCR. If you've got the details for the English certificate you'll presumably have the candidate number to allow them to find the relevant records.

Request a replacement exam certificate or a certified statement of results if you've lost your original - check the list of old exam boards if your board no longer exists

GCSEs were first taken in 1988, with teaching having started in autumn 1986. Before that it was CSEs or O-Levels.

Around 1985 (I think).

School records only go back so far. So i would say it would extremely unlikely they would have your records. Also there might not be many staff members around who may remember what board was used at the time. (I previously worked at a school and there were not many teachers that had been there a long time, this was back around 2010). Also you may be unfortunate that the school you attended may of shut down. In kent there is at least three secondary schools i am aware have shut in the last 15 years (Walmer, Pent Valley and chaucer tech btw) or in the majority of cases may of become a academy.

It would mainly be the exam board itself would be the best place to ask. But each school may of used a different board.

Ask any old friends from your school if they have their maths GCSE certificate and can tell you which exam board your school used?

(Or investigate Facebook groups/pages for your old school?)

I did mine in 98 and my maths was awarded by edexcel.

As those above have mentioned, assuming you are in England, the three main awarding bodies are AQA, Edexcel (Pearson) and OCR, and they also hold results for older boards that were merged into them.

If you don't have any luck, you could also try contacting the local education authority where you took them.

Dunno if it helps, but mine from 1996 were mainly “University of London Examinations and Assessment Council”, and a few were randomly “Midlands examining group”.

As an aside, you mean you don’t have your magical red binder any more?

I had to track mine down a few years ago. I am sure I found a web page where you can put where you sat the test and what year and it would tell you the examining body (long since forgotten the web page, but I found it through a google search), after finding out I applied to get my certificates which were not exactly cheap!

It's not an issue if you can't find your GCSE's anyway. You'll end up just having to do the functional skills for Maths and English which there will be a dedicated session for it. Only a Level 2 is required which isn't that hard to achieve.

Hi, I started on a trainee course last July and there were a couple on my course that didnt have maths or English and they just did a course on the side as part of the apprenticeship. However they were contacted some weeks ago to say they were no longer required to do it due to changes within the apprenticeship if they didnt want too. Might be worth checking

I am 60, but still got my certificates from GCE certs 1981 through to graduation in 1987, in a folder in a metal box at home. I did get asked for originals when I started a job aged 42 (some apparently make over claims about qualifications),

I assumed they wanted to know I was honest and not making qualifications up to look good, and they wanted to see originals with the embossed stamps to avoid them being photoshopped from someone else.

Our school used a mix of 3 exam Boards back then, have some London, Oxford, Cambridge Board certs

From understanding, because the training scheme is now an apprenticeship they needed evidence you meet the requirements

I've just read this thread with interest because I'm in the same position, I passed my GCSE's back in 1988 and I've had no sight of any certificates since then, can't even remember what they looked like. I was given general advice by the job centre that most employers would not bother to ask to see them because I have 35 years experience in full time employment, and that was more important.

I'm at the early stages of applying for railway jobs, both for driver (SWR or GTR Southern) and signaller (NR), and now I'm worried this is another hurdle I'll have to jump over.... can anyone tell me if this is now normal that they will always ask to see certificates across all TOCs? or was this just specific to the situation with the OP (elduderino78) with GWR?

If this is a requirement I'm going to have to get busy figuring out how to get replacements if that's even possible.

I had to get hold of my degree certificate in 2008 as part of a job application, but I guess this trumped O-level and A-level certificates at the time because I wasn’t asked for these. Getting my degree thing was easy because I knew who to ask.
For O levels my school certainly used different boards for different subjects. It even refused to do an O level in History because it didn’t like any of the boards’ syllabuses. Fortunately this was my worst subject (other than Religious Education) so I dropped it.
