GCR Class 127 DMU

Evening - for 1st gen DMU fans

Some good news from my visit to the GCR today, 1 half of their 127 unit was 'chugging away' (stationary) at Loughborough, a guard had told me its the railway's intention to re-instate this unit soon (maybe for some work on the 101!?)

Dont know where the other half is (+ the 120 trailer) be nice to see that running soon anyway!

grear, always liked these (and the class 125s on the kings x suburban and before that liv st non electrifued lines). great crackling exhausts. in their last days in 1983 some worked as 3 car sets on barking-gospel oak and at the end as power twins on same line, boy did they go!

Thanks for the photos had seen the one opposite the platform but not the other. Do they have any other units there Tom? (apart from the other 101 power car)

The have several 101s - one set in traffic and another stored at Swithland, plus a spare power car and a trailer car which is undergoing restoration.

In your second picture, is that an Iarnród Éireann liveried coach on the right? If so, what is it, a steam heat unit?

It's an ex-IE mark 1 generator van that they used to use with the Cravens sets. It's been re-wheeled and the GCR intend to use it on their dining trains I believe (not certain about that last bit).

I read on the Railcar Association website that the 101 centre trailer is actually from a 111 and is in fact the last survivor of that class. Likewise the trailer they plan to use in the 127 is from a 120.

The other 127 driving car is round the back of the shed. It's a publicly accessible area, you can't miss it if you walk up to the canal bridge.

Ah, so thats where the second 'half' of the 127 is! not ventured past the shed before, i need to expand my horizons! I would imagine that either the 101 or 127 is destined for the Mountsorrel line

I think the idea is to use the railbus on Mountsorrel. I have a picture of that too.

It needs a little attention to the bodywork

He He just a bit! Really good to see these machines being bought back to life. In all honesty as a kid these 1st gen DMU's were my favourite types of trains above everything. But by the time i was 15ish the 150's were taking over the world :cry::cry: tho i rather liked the 151's, pity they didnt take off.
