Gc - 180112

Currently heading south on GC 180112 with 1408 service off York for "the cross". The ride quality is terrible! I can hardly type in a sensible fashion as the train is dancing about so much! I think it is the worst ride i have had for a long time! (even Pacers are better than this!) Thought at one point (temple hirst junction) we came off the track it was that bad!

Wonder if anyone else has similar experiances

After having a ride on one of their HSTs yesterday, all I can say is "you have my sympathy".I don't like the 180s at all. I did however have a GC 180 not long ago to Bradford and it was quite rough-riding.

I haven't been on a 180 at top speed but I had a worst than Pacer ride on a M500 Manchester Metrolink tram running a Piccadilly-Altrincham section. The M500 tried to do top speed at one section and felt like a boat on very rough seas.

that is what this feels like at times! the table i am working on is vibrating so much it is outrageous! Great fun watching people try and walk to the buffet!

Sorry, but ive been on the 180's and the way you're talking about them is exagerated a bit too much. They are bumpy at times, but in no way is it outrageous, in fact - i travelled Hartlepool - London a few times with them, and never have i had problems.

Only had trouble on the 180's once before but today was really bad. The table was vibrating so much i couldnt use a mouse and had to stop work. i dont expect super smooth, but this was over the top.

I travel on 180s fairly regularly between Manchester and Preston and the ride is fantastic, maybe it was a problem with that particular unit.

I think it must be - looking at my journey log now that i am back in the office i note that i had 180112 previously on a Friday night 1917 service from KGX to York and it was just as bad. Perhaps a little trip into the works might be needed. Also looking at my log i didnt note any problems on the 180's i had from Doncaster to KGX on the West Riding GC service.

PS isnt the 1408 off York supposed to be an HST service?

Never had a problem with vibration and movement on 180s, but on an EC HST one time we were shaking all over the place, seriously never had such a terrible ride on nearly anything even a Pacer!

112 is statistically the worst 180 set for reliability; the resident demic. Of course this shouldn't affect ride quality but you never know what Heaton/Crofton are(n't) capable of knocking out these days!

Used to travel on squeaky trains (class 180s) on the GWML fairly often. Never really had troubles with the journey being bumpy (that I remember).

I've heard 180s have hunting issues above 100mph - having never ridden one while they were on the GWML (rarely came this far west and only on the all stops that took so long that the following HST would catch it up!)

That would be great! You can also tell him how much i normally enjoy traveling on his trains and that i seek them out for my journeys between Northallerton/York and Kings Cross. Just had a bad one today.

I could also tell him myself when i see him most mornings at Northallerton!

180112 is without doubt the runt of the litter. The vibrating tables are a problem and that set often has electrical problems. I've travelled on it frequently but never thought the ride was that bad.

I enjoy them so much i drive from Darlington to Northalelrton to get the GC to KX rather than East Coast ( the price & the free cup of tea helps to!) You get a better level of comfort and service and the quickest point to point times between YRK & KGX. Just yesterday was a bad one.

First time i have ever had anything bad to say about GC. Now XC is a different matter..........................

Yup! Seems to be issues at High Speed, or track issues between Selby and Selby Canal Jcn, the ride was worse than some of my trips by ferry!

One of the OOC fitters who had the (dis)pleasure of becoming familiar with the units over the years obviously had the stats to hand, and runs a mile whenever he sees it.

It's based on my own experiences of having travelled on the GC 180 fleet regularly since they were introduced, and talking to the staff who have to crew it who tell me what its like from their perspective.

Admittedly, I'd love to see some firm stats on it too...

Fair enough. It was a genuine question. I've worked on 180 maintenance on and off for the past 7 years and even though there were a couple that were worse than others we didn't have access to any firm data nor did we know how it was measured. I would imagine miles per casualty but that was not really something i got involved with.

Had 180107 this morning on the late running 0746 from Northallerton to York and i am happy to say the ride was great - just a shame the normal HST didnt appear! Perhaps 180112 IS the runt of the litter!
