Off to York today for a job interview and noticed GC's 180112 at Kings Cross Shut down lights off but still reserved and full of rubbish. Did this fail last night?
Noticed GC HST Set for the Early Sunderland Trip.

EDIT: 0645 SUN -KGX & 1121 KGX -SUN now cancelled due to a train fault.

Last Friday I noticed the 19:nn service to Sunderland was leaving from platform 9 (can't remember exact time). Seems a good use of a shorter platform rather than blocking a long platform with a short train. Do FCC ever split trains on a long platform? Also our GC 180 service to Bradford seemed to develope faults as we went along. Too hot air con in one coach, then no wifi in some coaches then no power in some coaches then disabled toilet failed. We joked the engines might fail next but they did not and we arrivd Bradford safely.

Oh yeah, FCC services on 0-8 are often front train only sometimes front 8 coaches, often there is a dead unit at the London end. Depends. They're often like that on 9-11 but obviously only front train as its 8 coach capacity. I agree that the 180's from 9-11 works well, it's a better use of capacity.

i was 180112 yesterday when it form the 1003 from eaglescliffe, i did notice that when the engine in coach C (where i was sat) was going at full tilt the power kept dropping off and then coming back on and sounded as if it was spluttering. and no it wasn't the driver easing back on the power and putting it back on.

I've had that before on an XC Voyager (same engines) where the engine kept surging and dropping off. I was told by an ex forum member who drove them that it was the engine "hunting" - I can't remember exactly what it showed though...I'll see if I still have the PM

The Class 180 has a wheelslip control system that will reverts the engine to idle when it sees the motor bogie wheels spinning faster than the trailer bogie . It will keep doing this until the wheels stop spinning , given the time of year I suspect this what you were listening to .

I do stil have the PM see if this matches what you had

In the coach I was in, from about Stoke onward (only noticed it then anyway) the engine seemed like it was taking power and then suddenly throttling back - a cycle which continued probably a few times each minute.

It is kind of tricky to describe it but it did seem to feel like the coach lurched when it did happen and it throttled back.

I was wondering if this is something that if normal (ie. engine only providing hotel power as you've mentioned before, rather than tractive effort) or if it was a fault? I did wonder at times whether it was about to conk out on us!

It sounds like the engine was hunting. Basically it is more of a fuel supply problem. It was probably isolated from traction power so was just providing power for electrics and auxiliaries

Re. the post above - I've had that on an EMT Meridian, I think. It was during very snowy weather - but the relevant part of the MML had RHTTs working, and trains were running punctually and without much in the way of wheelslip (from what I could tell). The fuel supply issue sounds more likely.

I was on 180112 today and things sounded normal from the cross to York, so whatever it was, it had either been fixed or the condition of the rails improved.
