Nene Valley Railway Ltd

A special gala weekend of activities, based around Peterborough and the Nene Valley Railway, is being organised by Modern Railways with support from sister publication Hornby Magazine. It will take place on 7/8 September 2024 and advance tickets are on sale now exclusively through Key Publishing.

Other activities planned over the weekend include rail ale trains, live music and a selection of modern image model railway layouts at Wansford station (supported by our sister title Hornby Magazine). Plans are in development for a passenger shuttle service to operate between Peterborough main line station and the NVR on Saturday 7 September, with details to be confirmed.

What I’m really wondering about is the mention of a shuttle service between the Peterborough Mainline station and the Nene Valley Railway. A Saturday and Sunday shuttle bus timetable has been released, but the site on the Saturday section still says:

Is there any chance of a rail link using the GBRF locos in from Platform 5 to the Nene at Fletton?

It's really surprising to see 69009 at a gala again in such a small period of time, surprised that 69012 isn't showing for such a high profile occasion

Transport Past Times can confirm that we will be at Wansford Station with our Sales Stand for the whole weekend , we we be in our large Green Gazebo and next door to certain Famous Steam Locomotive

Have been sorting out everything Modern Traction and will be bring mix of Books, Paperwork and Ephemera along with some Hardware .

Will have various special offers on each day eg all £3.00 Books will have the offer of 4 for £10. - Scans to show just a small selection of the titles etc

Plans were unfortunately dropped due to it not being feasible hence the rail replacement service

Instead the 08 and 14 will be operating services up and down the Fletton branch from Orton Mere to the NR boundary fence.

No. Not a huge concern. If they’re not going to Peterborough they’re not of much use.

It's surprising because it worked at the Severn Valley in May. I expect more interested in red pen than paint! Possibly put some people off as they will have already had 69009?

Ahh, I’m not the kind of person who bashes in that way, I’m just surprised there are so many people who try to get to “every gala”. Personally I’m far more interested in 69009 and I might go largely to see that. 69012 wouldn’t have interested me as it’s a standard GBRf. However, if it will put a lot of people off, then I understand your surprise!

69001 (debatable but it’s a variation of GBRf), 69003, 69006, 69010 and 69012 are in standard GBRf IIRC.

However, there will be potential reasons why 69012 has not been selected. It could be on scheduled maintenance, it could have suffered a fault or it could be required elsewhere and cannot be swapped out in time.

I'm sure there are others that haven't worked passenger either since conversion?
I would have thought more thought would go in to this with it being a charity event. The enthusiast market is very fickle so important all these things are right otherwise revenue won't be maximised.

There may well be. The bashers will also be put off by the lack of the whole route from the NVR to Fletton. Doesn’t seem like this has been managed brilliantly as far as getting enthusiasts on board. I would rather have 69009 than 69012 (clearly in a minority I’m aware!) but my favourite is actually 005 which I’ve seen a few times on the North London line, although I’m assuming that one’s been used to death by now on passenger trains?

It’ll rapidly reach the point where 69009 has pulled more trains at galas than actual freight!

Don’t forget that there are also depot tours over the weekend so there may be more celebrities there.

I'm trying to make sense of the timetable. When it shows two loco letters. For example A/B and DG, does the absence or presence of a forward slash indicate that locos will be double headed or topped and tailed or vice versa?

A / indicates top and tail locos (e.g. A/B is the Class 47 and Class 57 either end of the set) while your example DG indicates double headed (Class 69 leading Class 45 in that example). In basic terms, the Mk1 set will always need a double header as a translator from the vacuum brake only stock to the air brake only GBRf loco.
