Talking of deliveries, any more on 012 & 013 that docked last Thursday?

For anyone wanting something a bit different today, 4L68 Birch Coppice - London Gateway has 99001+99003 leaving Birch Coppice according to RTT. I believe this to be correct as 99001 didn't move from there since arriving on Saturday morning.

What I don't know is how much of the journey both 99's will be involved, could be to Hams Hall, could be to Wembley, could be all the way!

The schedule with the allocation: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:R56660/2026-08-19/detailed suggests it won't be coming off at Hams Hall, as it's not booked to stop there!

The stops at Bescot or Wembley are the only ones long enough to remove a loco (and in a moderately sensible place), and neither appear to have an activity code applied for any change to formation (not that the lack of a code would prevent the locos being taken off anyway).

While I get what you're saying, the reason I included Hams Hall is because, despite 4L68 not being booked to stop there, that's what happened last Thursday. 4L68 was 99001+99004 and made an unscheduled diversion into Hams Hall to drop 99004 off. Confirmed by @Adrian Barr in post #2027

RTT also suggests 99002 and 99005 have swapped diagrams at London Gateway this morning. 99002 is now on 4M01 to East Midlands Gateway and 99005 is now on 4M47 to Hams Hall.

And instantly you've been proven right, as not only has 4L68 avoided Hams Hall as booked, but other things have also occurred related to 99's since the earlier posts!

4M01 London Gateway - East Midlands Gateway was at a stand at Woodgrange Park for a while. 4M47 London Gateway - Hams Hall was at a stand at Thames Haven Jn for a while. Something broke down ahead of 4M01 (I think 4M91 London Gateway - Lawley Street) and the line was blocked for ages. Both trains are now on the move but heavily delayed.

99006+99010 are currently worked 4D32 Peterborough - Doncaster Decoy. I have this as the 99th confirmed mainline working for 99006. The 4th 99 to hit 99 confirmed mainline workings after 99001, 99002 and 99005.

Out of interest, does there seem to be any pattern to the 99s operating in pairs or on their own, either diesel vs electric or particular locos? And when operating in pairs, does it tend to be double heading or top/tail?

I know 90s have tended to double head on freight, I believe for extra brake force, but the 99s being more modern and multi-mode perhaps don't have the same issues when operating on electric mode.

Pretty sure for 90s its basically every reason, they were not built to haul intermodal trains the size we have today and especially up shap as an example, the 99s are made to pull those long intermodal trains on both diesel and electric individually, so GBRF only use 1 to haul them, any extra loco should probably be a locomotive movement that will be put in double headed formation or on the back however is more benefical (or random, im not sure)
Also a 99 on electric is much more powerful i think than on diesel

The 90s were originally designed to haul fast passenger trains. Although there was a sub class which had different gear ratios to haul freight trains. Perhaps if these were brought back into use the trains could be hauled. by one loco.

Whereas the 99s were designed to operate freight trains. With a sub class yet to be delivered to operate stepper trains at 100mph max and have ETH fitted and suitable couplers for sleeper trains. They could no doubt be used on charter passenger trains if any were available on the day.

Trying not to deviate off topic but all 90s are the same, none had a different gear ratio. Many were allocated to freight sector but were mechanically identical to the passenger sector. Sometimes freight sector imposed speed restrictions for maintenance purposes as kept costs down.

The only difference between the Intercity & RES 90/0 & RFD's 90/1 was RFD isolated the ETH so the Intercity sector couldn't nick them to cover for failures.
Agreed re. 90s - but 86501 was actually regeared, and often worked trains on its own that were otherwise allocated to pairs of standard 86s.
Yes in 2000, but was generally worked on diagrams booked for single 90s & certainly kept off the Anglo-Scottish liner diagrams.
The regearing was reversed and 86501 became 86608 once again in 2016.

The confirmed movements for 99001 in the past 24 hours are 4L68 Birch Coppice - London Gateway behind 99003 and 4E00 London Gateway - Peterborough behind 66715. There's a VSTP schedule for an 0M71 Peterborough - Leicester today which I suspect will be the next move for 99001, either solo or dragged.

0M71 Peterborough - Leicester: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:07588/2026-08-20/detailed

99002, 99003 and 99005 are on the 3 London Gateway container diagrams.

99004+99011 were seen outside at Leicester yesterday, so 99007 should be inside.

99006+99010 have continued driver training runs between Doncaster Decoy and Peterborough yard this week, but 4D30/4H31 aren't running today.

99008+99009 remain at Doncaster Decoy also for training.

New WTT paths for Class 99's have appeared on RTT this week starting w/c Monday 7th September 2026. Both are in daylight. These are the first ever WTT paths to/from Leicester depot for 99's.

0M99 08:49 Peterborough - Leicester 10:22: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:H00526/2026-09-09/detailed

0E99 12:51 Leicester - Peterborough 15:00: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:H00525/2026-09-09/detailed

0E99 has 36 minutes booked in Humberstone Road sidings which is why its booked to take over 2 hours from end to end.

AFAIK, the double-heading is mainly so there is enough powered-axle adhesion to cope with the worst weather/railhead conditions on Shap and Beattock (so the heaviest trains don't stall due to wheelslip). The 90's have rheostatic braking, so double-heading will provide more of that, but given that most of the freight loco fleet (e.g. the 66s) doesn't have it anyway I doubt that is the main reason for the pairing.

IIRC the pairs of Freightliner 90's are electronically power/current limited to the equivalent of six powered axles, so they don't exceed the OHLE current limits, but all eight axles are powered. I think the pairs of FL 86's may have been power limited by disconnecting/disabling one or two motors in the pair.

As the 99s are now in active service the majority of the discussions have been about allocations the thread has been moved to a more suitable area. Other discussion is still welcome, whether in this thread or a new thread.

The prediction I posted all the way back on page 47 (post #1392) is about to come true. As also posted by @HST125Scorton a GBRF 99 will make a debut on the 6L48 Garston - Dagenham and 6X41 Dagenham - Garston diagram this week. The 99 will come from Leicester depot on Monday morning.

0Z26 Leicester - Garston:

And for anyone wanting 99012+99013, bad luck I'm afraid. They're being collected Tuesday, but under the cover of darkness for the majority of the journey.

0M75 Portbury - Leicester:

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

99003 - 82 confirmed mainline workings - Currently at Birch Coppice since 22/08/26 arriving on 4M68.
99004 - 89 confirmed mainline workings - Currently at Leicester depot since 13/08/26 arriving on 0Z99.

99010 - 73 confirmed mainline workings - Currently at Peterborough yard since 20/08/26 arriving on 4Z64.
99011 - 23 confirmed mainline workings - Currently at Leicester depot since 14/08/26 arriving on 0Z13.
99012+99013 - Currently at Portbury docks since 12/08/26 arriving on Oceanus Highway (with thanks to ExRes)

The last weekday where no 99's moved on the mainline was Thursday 16th July 2026.
The last day where no 99's moved on the mainline was Sunday 19th July 2026.

Track/route news: Nothing new within the past week.

Subject to the usual caveats:

99002 - 4M01/4L01 London Gateway - East Midlands Gateway - London Gateway diagram.

99003 - 0D72 Birch Coppice - East Midlands Gateway and then 4L72 East Midlands Gateway - London Gateway and then 4M68/4L68 London Gateway - Birch Coppice - London Gateway diagram.

99005 - 4M47/4L47 London Gateway - Hams Hall - London Gateway diagram.

99008 - 0G31 Doncaster Decoy - Peterborough via Lincoln Central and Spalding. Unsure if this allocation is true or if 99009 will actually be with it.

0G31:

There's also 0Z26 Leicester - Garston and then 6L48 Garston - Dagenham and then 6X41 Dagenham - Garston if it runs. I've been told this is now cancelled for this week.

There is a new 0Z47 0920 Leicester L.I.P. to Portbury Auto Terminal Gbf in for the collection of 99012 + 99013 tomorrow so perhaps an early departure for Leicester?
