Usually mentioned in this thread, though the press release & partnership with Akiem is a new announcement. As for the 77s, don’t get your hopes for something new up - they are just the European (well, French) designation for what we know as 66s, and are former 77s which were on lease to EuroCargo Rail - I.e non imported 66s from EWS / DB.

It’s the French designation - or probably more accurately CC77000. In Germany they are class 266.

Thankfully it won’t stop GBRf though, a few of their former European 66s previously had the roof mounded air conditioner units fitted, but they can easily be removed with the help of a few spanner’s and a grinder.

Off they come! They do look like they were taken from over the door of my local Londis, so presumably nothing too complex or expensive to remove.

Some European railway systems don't tend to use the TOPS style class number as rigidly as the Brits. The Netherlands and French being good examples, although the French and Swiss have changed policy more recently.

A lot of European operators class the JT42CWRM as 77s.


so this would be some of the akiem locos, the Euro Cargo Rail/DBC 77s and Beacon Rail's newer 29001 and 29002 (operated by HHPI)

Saw 77 502 at Roberts Road Doncaster today, freshly unloaded from a road transporter at about 12.30pm. There was another one waiting for unloading on the road outside. Both were in red and white livery. Also a grey euro 66 on site

I might be wrong, but I believe the "Class 77s" have Class 66/6 gearing, so are slower speed but can haul more than a standard 66. In this connection the locos now (and intended to be) numbered 66790-99 & 66301-16 are a right mix of the two types and it surprises me that the 66/6 geared locos have not been separated out and numbered something different (6667x-6669x for instance) - Freightliner number theirs differently, both here in the UK and in Poland.

The giveaway will be which pool code(s) they go to when they are put into service. GBRf have used pool GBHH for the lower-geared locos, currently just 66793-796.
