I've heard that GBRf told 'Modern Railways' magazine that they were being placed into warm storage pending review of future requirements, if so I assume anyone with a subscription to MR would be able to find the article

"A GBRf spokesperson told Modern Railways on 7 January: “With our new bi-mode Class 99s entering service imminently, we are undertaking an analysis of our locomotive fleet. For the time being, we have placed our Class 60 locomotives into warm storage pending review of their future requirements.”"

I was in Newcastle a couple of weeks ago and saw 66768 on the Lynemouth - Tyne Coal Terminal (and reverse) workings. It really struggled to get going from a standstill and sounded under a lot of strain, to the extent where I almost had to cover my ears due to the racket. In that moment I understood why this used to be a surefire Class 60 working.

I could understand them 'making do' with the standard 66/7's when they decided to store the 60's, but I really can't understand the logic behind buying the 60's if they're not going to use them.

HS2 traffic is certainly low and in a bit of lull at the moment but should pickup as the Euston tunnels start in earnest so spoil moves will pick up, the segments have been running at steady state pace for while (about 9% delivered pre TBM start). HS2 traffic likely won't recover to previous peak levels and is more likely to be low traffic levels for much longer.

Construction traffic and material volumes (apart from HS2) are low at the moment so needing fewer locos will be the main reason and the 99s arriving will being some consideration of the more unusual parts of the fleet. e.g. 59, 47s (some of the the 69s have the some mode for moving MUs?) and 60.

With the 69s it could be something as simple as wheels getting thin on some of them so they are storing those 69s to push the parts replacement cost further into the future?

60s are owned by Beacon, 69s are owned by Progress Rail so returning some to the ROSCOs may be the medium term aim if there is no long tern use for them.

I really can't understand the logic behind buying the 60's if they're not going to use them.

There could be many reasons including what the terms of the lease are around length of contract and termination clauses that mean Beacon see it as advantageous to be able to get them off the books. Don’t forget Beacon have bought Eversholt… who own the the earlier build of the GBRf 66s.

Aye, I heard 66799 pass by this morning, and later heard 66689 heading in the other direction. The noise difference between the two! 66689 was so much quieter - maybe she was struggling less than 799 due to her regeared bogies?

I would say that's almost certainly the case! I also saw 66689 and it was noticeably more comfortable.

I was under the impression that GBRf were re-gearing 10 of their 66's to ensure they could take over services from the 60's, but so far only 66689 has run on this service.

A tad pedantic? I read all of todays posts and in the most it relates the 60's being withdrawn and all other posts were related to that (inc 66s/69s). At no point did i think the posts were off topic.
