Anybody apply for the Assistant Train Manager job at Eastleigh? Anybody heard anything or got inside info on the job?

You get a set of Van keys , a bit of training , then you drive around the country seeing trains in and out of yards , maybe even get a stay in a hotel of their choice in a place of their choice , sometimes even for a time of their choice !
Will be extremely similar to the mobile groundstaff on Freightliner / DBS or Colas.
Enthusiasm for railways and even more for Motorway driving a must

With added features like traction courses and a small driving course allowing then to drive loco's and trains at designated locations.

Is it possible you're confusing the ATM grade with that of an RO (similar to 'ground staff' in other FOCs) ?

The thought of beinf mobile is what appeals to me in this job. Im currenlty a fitter working in a shed all day long. Depaeperate to join the railway in an operational capacity and getting out and about. The job covers Eastleigh and Westbury I beleive. Do you get your own van? The only problem is it asked for people expereinced in shunting. Im hoping that my expereince driving and shunting on heritage railways will count.

I applied for the Ferme Park position, I email'd them a couple of weeks back and got an almost instant reply saying they were still considering applications, but would email back when they've made a decision on who to get in for interview. Hope that helps.

Not sure to be honest but if you have previous experience at other FOCs I'm sure any application will be looked at.

"Driving around the country seeing trains in and out of yards" is a bit of a misnomer. For those not working at their home depot the vast majority will usually be at yards within 30-120 minutes of it.

Lodges are usually Premier Inn or similar, plus you get about £30 lodging allowance and £50 meal allowance per night.

RO's only work at one location.
Eastleigh ATM's get work in Portbury, Avonmouth, Neath, Moreton on Lugg, Southampton plus Railvac, and I believe Theale. So yeah, lots of driving.

They work anytime of the day! Seriously its a 24 hour thing!

i was hearing a GBRf ATM moaning about something last week then mentioned something about a ATME grade which he wasnt. Sounded like more responsibility to do with conducting, possibly drivers who dont sign particular yards. I could be wrong. I didnt hang around long enough!

Had a quick look at this some time ago and it seems 'suitable' sites are going to be thin on the ground - plain rail, no crossings, no severe gradients etc etc and the possibility that a TM with route knowledge will be required to remain on site incase anything goes wrong (as if that would ever happen on the average TIII ).

Your right. I think thats the reason the roll out of the ATMe grade has been pretty lackluster. We have 3 such ATMe's at our place and can probably count on one hand how many booked turns they have done between them over the last 12-18 months.

The rest of those promised the grade seem to have been either ignored or forgotten about.
