Hi all,

On GB Railfreight website there's a job advert for "Assistant train manager" positions at numerous locations.

Could anyone shed some light on what this job is? I read that GB call their drivers "train managers" so what does an assistant train manager do (pardon my ignorance) and would it pave the way to becoming a qualified driver...... Huh hum....... Train manager

Most of your questions have already been answered but I'll add that the ATM position definitely can lead to a TM role - GB will confirm the number of emails every month congratulating former RO's and ATMs on passing out as qualified TMs.

For the price of a stamp theres not much to lose. You may not get this intake due to them wanting staff up and running quickly but you might get the next.

Thanks for the input everyone, most appreciated. GB, with your comment about the emails does that mean you work for GB Railfreight then? If you worked hard as an ATM, knuckled down, kept your nose clean and maintain a good reputation could you get to TM quickly or is there some sort of time scale involved? I think I'll put an application in anyway, I'd quite happily take a £14k pay cut to come off the road and get my foot in the door on the trains.

Time scales involved from ATM to TM vary quite wildly from depot to depot. You have to do minimum 2 years as ground staff but you could be waiting a lot longer if your depot doesn't have spaces or unless you move else where.

But in general you are correct, keep your head down, do your time, don't have too many balls ups and you should be in a good position.

so if you have no train/shunting experience is it worth a shot ?

No, the only way into the mainline driving grade at GBRf is either already being qualified, or via ground staff roles.

The 2 year rule isn't firmly set in concrete, one of the last ATM courses on chap went straight onto the next TM course without having spent a day on the job.

Conversely, I know one who passed out recently after almost 7 years as an ATM...
