Given some of the announcements over the last week - notably of Virgin and BA effectively leaving Gatwick, I'm not sure your post has aged that well and I'd probably be more inclined to bet against Gatwick.

Given some of the announcements over the last week - notably of Virgin and BA effectively leaving Gatwick, I'm not sure your post has aged that well and I'd probably be more inclined to bet against Gatwick.

BA and Virgin between than have rather less than 20% of Gatwick passenger numbers. Even if they both leave (and BA is intending to downsize, not leave), that would put Gatwick passenger numbers back to where they were 6 years ago.

And another of their top 10 is Aer Lingus - who do alot of code-share with BA.
It would strengthen Easyjet's position no doubt - but they're also a key player at Luton and Stanstead - it may come down to who's offering the best value for slots, because from a passenger perspective there's nothing to choose between the 3 and for alot of people Luton and Stanstead are much more convenient to get to than Gatwick.

But for a lot of people, Gatwick is more convenient than Luton / Stansted - namely pretty much everyone in south London and Kent / Surrey / Sussex and most of Hampshire.
All are convenient from London but Gatwick is particularly good for the affluent home counties south of the Thames, and has good rail links from most such areas. Luton also very good from the souh via Thameslink. Stansted is furthest away from those areas, and an annoying cross London transfer away by train but clearly is much easier from the whole of East Anglia and all points north thereof by all modes.
How does that matter at all? If Gatwick were to close, there would hardly be people standing outside with banners campaigning for it to reopen. They would just have to go to Heathrow instead.
Err, it matters because they will continue to use it, and therefore it won’t close. Neither will any of the others in London for that matter.
Isn't that just approval to use its existing second runway. The 'proper' second runway proposal would involve some considerable work and expansion of the site and in the current circumstances now very unlikely to happen.
Unlikely they will be needing it for a while though.
