The fast-track security at South Terminal would appear to be of no benefit since staff keep directing any passengers in there to reduce load on the slow-track route, and also presumably to give the fast-track staff something to do!

Yes this has happened to me several times when I have been on my own. However the normal(non-priority) security is extremely quick at Gatwick.

In April I'd hope the Witherspoons would be re open.

However a larger problem has emerged, on the Gatwick Express company booking confirmation, the thing I print and take it get into the lounge, it doesn't specify the number of people!!!! Obviously there are two of us, but how will they know that in the lounge ? I can't believe in the email receipt / itinerary doesn't say the amount of people, are we sure to have trouble ??? Thanks... :(

Doesn't seem that good value to me. The First Class Anytime return is, as you say, £56. The standard anytime return fare is £34.90, a difference of £21.10. You can buy a Gatwick No1 lounge pass for £22.50. So a saving of £1.40 and a free upgrade is the actual deal.

The No1 Lounge is good as lounges go - as good as BA Terminal 5 but much smaller. It is small and can get crowded at times when they can turn people away. So check it gives you the right to enter the lounge and entry is not at their discretion.

And please don't overdo the drink at the free bar. You may think being drunk on the plane is fun but I can assure you no-one else does and it can lead to you being denied boarding.

As I SAY my friend has a disabled railcard, making it £73.90 for us both and making the First Class anytime return each £36.95, the lounge pass is £22.50 as YOU pointed out. So if we bought a standard anytime return and the lounge access it would be £57.40 each. So for £20.45 LESS we get first class train travel... how is that NOT a good deal???

Is the bar self-service in the lounge? All the BA ones I have used are, I really hope it is...

Now obviously this has its advantages, if you get to Gatwick early and have a few beers,

I am just hoping the lounge is good, and they are not stingy with the booze (I am used to self serve ones like BA business lounges or Servisair ones).

And it is no fun being on a flight with someone whose had one too many just as you clearly find it no fun being on a train with loud people or kids

Not too fussed about the refreshments on the train, as long as the seats are spacious have a table and away from loud passengers, screaming kids etc.
Enjoy your trip.

All right calm it down chaps, just a misunderstanding brought on by lack of tone of voice and lack of seeing one another face to face :)
