Now that they have started running the gatwick express as through trains to brighton (the 442's at pk times), its interesting that the fare from victoria to gatwick is the same as the fare to haywards heath - the extra ten miles or so come for free!

Now, whilst it is possible to get railcard discounts on fares booked at the office at victoria - are the on board inspectors correct to say that they cannot issue discounted fares (either full or discounted £5 southern+ supplements) on board?

Thanks,

They advertise fares available on board to Gatwick I believe, so are obliged to offer discounted tickets (off peak, railcard, etc) to Gatwick. However not beyond Gatwick.

If someone was to buy a discounted ticket to Gatwick, and then sought the guard before the train arrived in Gatwick and said that their travel plans changed at they wanted to stay on to Haywards Heath, the guard would need to excess... but the excess would be £0.00. However if you stayed on after Gatwick and did that you could be issued a penalty fare I believe (not by the guard but by someone authorised to do so), as penalty fares operate beyond Gatwick. I could be wrong on that though, someone who is local to the area may be able to confirm.

All Gatwick Express Fares from London are "anytime" so I doubt that they are obliged to sell off peak tickets.

They would if they existed, having advertised that you can buy on board at no extra cost! However looking at the fares in comparison, the SDR fare is more expensive to Gatwick! The Anytime single is the same price.
