No worries, it's not really personal considering its the same for any Gateline candidates I suppose!

For me, eyesight check consisting of the usual reading numbers and saying what you see in front of you, a hearing test, weight check on scales and general health questions. Last is the urine sample that you provide in the toilet there, I think my whole medical took about 30 mins max, it's over relatively quickly and you find the results out after 2 working days or something like that.

Most of the health tests are aimed at safety critical roles, Gateline isn't, so only the Drugs/Alcohol urine screening is really essential to it.

One piece of advice is familiarise yourself with the location of the place (Friars bridge court I think its called), as you want to get there on time at least and have a stress free journey there!

Erm nope lol! You stand on the scales with your clothes on. When you provide the urine sample it's in the loo by yourself, everything is conducted quite professionally!

Sounds like a HGV medical.
As long as you can walk and talk and have 2 of everything you should have, you're in.

In non-safety critical roles (such as this one), they won't need to check for some stuff, although they'll tske s urine sample, they're not checking for alcohol, just drugs, so drinking is fine although I guess it wouldn't hurt to lay off the drink for the benefit of a medical, lol. They advise against taking certain 'over the counter' drugs I believe, and definitely no Co-codamol!

When the HR people told me about the medical, at my assessments, they said to take any medication taken with you so that they can allow for it in the drug screening.

Back when I was going through the process, I was dissappointed by how slow it was, after passing the medical, I got the start date and it was 5 weeks away, hopefuly you guys won't have to wait that long!

The induction was 5 weeks after the start date? Or was the start date 5 weeks away? I've just given my notice in to my current employer as I have a start date of the 30th January!

Sorry I meant the induction was 5 weeks after the medical, ie the start date being the same as the induction date. First payment is normally on the Friday during the month when all SWT staff get paid, so you will get paid Pro-rata to what you've worked up to that.

phew! My start date is 12 days after my medical! Well, it says "your employment with south west trains will commence on 30th January 2012." I took that as a start date!

Did you have your induction in Basingstoke? How long does the induction last, I just want to get started now .

I know the feeling, I was keen to get going too, its annoying having to count down the days!

The induction and training at Basingstoke is around 10 days long, then you get barrier training at your "local" station, which lasts a few weeks working with another Gateline asssistant who will teach you the basics, so about a month after starting, you should get to operate the barriers on your own (although its always a bonus to get other people working with you!)

Relax! Otherwise your heart rate might be too high and you'll fail the medical. Just kidding! You will be absolutely fine, you won't believe me when I say it's so easy, but when you get home after it then you'll agree!

Anyone have any idea how much it will cost for a taxi from Waterloo to the place in Blackfriars court? I have my medical next week and I'm probably going to end up getting lost . That map they sent me wasn't much help.....

I used Google maps and took a printout of that with me to get there!

Taxi should cost no more than £5 as it is pretty close by.
