Gateline Assistant - Recruitment Tests

After countless times of applying for train guard and gateline positions with no success, I've finally been accepted to attended a assessment day for South West Trains down in Southampton next week.

The letter states I'll be their for 4 hours which will included a ticket checking test and working with words test. I was sent examples and booklet tests to practise on which seems very straight forward.

Has anyone been to one off these assessment days and knows what else will take place on the day as I don't believe two tests with take up the 4 hours. I'm guessing their will be some sort of video presentation and a chat, maybe some paper work to fill out.

what station did you apply for?

i've been working with proactive rail for just over a year and a half doing gateline for SWT and London Overground.
just memorize the peak and off peak times, rail cards and restrictions

Thanks for the info. I've applied for Havant and theirs opportunities to work at local stations if overtime is needed.

The hours offered arw mornings and evenings but I don't know if I'll have to work both or just a mix of mornings and evenings.

I believe the shift pattern varies each week at Havant - you will work mornings one week and lates the next.

I've passed both the tests and an interview will be arranged shortly. The test were easy especially the working with words as the answers were already in the statements above, so it was just a matter of picking out the correct bits of info and words spelt correctly.

Anyway I was told that I would need to research and find out about South West Trains as a company and a lot of the questions in the interview will be examples of competencies and customer service that I've experienced.

I must say to anyone heading down to Southampton for a test, be prepared to do a lot of waiting about in a small room. Not only did my train journey their take forever even from Havantlol, I got up to the area and was told to wait while one persons checks through everyone's ID and paper work. This took over an hour to do which didn't help with people turning up late aswell. We got called in for the tests which took 8 minutes each to complete. The tests then had to be checked and another very long (1:30mins) wait to find out how we did and they called us up individually to be told. So yeah although I had good news at the end of it the whole day was a total pain all for the 16 mins of tests lol.

Really? You find this waiting hard? Just wait for if, and when, you get chosen and start on the lines!!

I don't have a proplem waiting if I'm being paid. I wouldn't say it was hard, just giving people the heads up even if they can't do anything about it of course. People their we're getting restless especially those that came from London area and these were saying if they were told about it before hand it wouldn't of been so bad just to be informed ect. The letter I had did say your required for approx 4 hours not statung apart for 16 mins the rest is waiting around. Just nice to know.

What are the good and bad points of the gateline job. Their must be things people don't wish for and things they like about the role.
