Stuck at Darlington as nothing running south from Newcastle at the moment. Hopefully they will turn a few northbound trains around here shortly.

''A gas leak near the railway in the Durham area is causing disruption to trains between Newcastle and York. Trains are currently unable to run between Newcastle and Darlington and are being delayed by up to 80 minutes while they wait for engineers to assess the issue. Buses are running between Newcastle and Darlington. It is anticipated that disruption will continue until approximately 16:00.''

Edit - hopefully on my way again shortly but nothing running on the ECML between Newcastle and Darlington

Wonder if they'll divert any HSTs via the Durham Coast. The Leamside line might also be useful today :(

All sorted now - some trains still running late (up to 100 mins!) and out of place but all fixed and running.

However, hasn't there been a gas leak at Durham station already within the last 12 months? Is there a longer term problem that needs fixing?

Answering my own question: yes, in February of this year. Unlikely to be coincidence?

Without knowing what caused the two failures, it is very hard to say. It could have been the initial problem reoccurring, a new issue created by work to fix the initial failure or two completely independent though co-located issues.

The gas leak was not at the station, but it was on a bank next to the A690 where the long stay car park is situated.

There is work going on that bank by the council and its contractors.

Thats not the A690. The road is Framwellgate Peth and is the start of the A691 from Durham towards Consett although the A690 isnt exactly far away from that location to be fair. With closure of the DLI museum theres talk of moving county hall to a riverside location where the former NSI building is tying in with the redevelopment of The Gates shopping centre and VTEC are supposed to be putting a second deck into the station car park and apparently it is all linked. Of course as usual with DCC its all talk unless theres a bung in it somewhere.

Its the same gas main that got clobbered in february but a different set of contractors doing a different job. So if someone hasnt passed on the "missing" data from the last job then its no wondwr the main got hit again. DCC never learns from past mistakes. Council of the yea? My @r$€!...

Apparently Durham station cannot have a second deck in that car park according to informed sources. Something to do with the ground underneath.

And my apologies the satnav said A690 so it obviously is in need of an update.
