I recently saw this video: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMFPugHkk/

If you hate tiktok and dont want to click, I'll spare you the trouble. The train is stuck in the tunnel, and the PIS has "Gas Factory Junction" implemented. Where is this junction, and more importantly why would it be implemented into the PIS system if it isn't a passenger stop? I also noticed that there was actual audio for "Not In Service" recorded by a voice I don't recognize, could anyone shine a light on who that could be and why that has also seemingly got a recording to it? What other hidden "destinations" such as these are also included within the 345 PIS system?

I'd guess the PIS system has taken the list of destinations from NR's list of TIPLOCs, or Timetable Planning Locations, which includes Junctions, Sidings and Depots as well as passenger stations. Gas Factory Junction is where the connection from Stratford joins the C2C line into Fenchurch Street. As for why it showed up I'm at a total loss.

A similar instance elsewhere: I've seen Foxhall Junction (immediately west of Didcot Parkway) appear on Cross-Country Voyagers' PIS, on the evening Reading to Birmingham service that would reverse there en route from Reading to Oxford. Not sure why either.

If the location is in the schedule, then it's because somebody in the planning office has forgotten to remove the public stop tick in the data field. Common enough error, we've had a thread on it before. Gas Factory Junction is an interesting one because AFAIK it's not in any XR schedule.

Gas Factory Junction is where both the original North London Railway and the direct London, Tilbury & Southend lines joined the original London & Blackwall Extension line from Limehouse to Bow. See map here

Crossrail runs more or less under that Extension line for a few hundred yards from Burdett Road to Gas Factory Junction. I imagine this is the point being referenced.

In the triangle, where the NLR went under the District line, there is a Crossrail access building. Here:

They have been known to keep a train there as a hot spare and during events at the Olympic Park to start service from Stratford heading towards Shenfield

The first link doesn't work for me, but this one does:

What a fantastically complex railway we once had...

345s have a habit of throwing a hissy fit when leaving sidings to a platform to start in passenger service. They also cannot display "not in service". The work around is to use a dummy headcode, 8Y00, which will then play that message and gas factory Junction comes up. With the new timetable, no trains are sent there during the pm peak. Instead they go to Liverpool Street, where the risk of being tagged is a lot less.

Much of it is still there in some shape or form.
With the exception of some connecting lines and goods sidings, I think it's all still there!

In fact to make that map today there would be more railways, as we now have HS1 and the Crossrail tunnels, plus Jubilee line and DLR.

Very true mate. It’s not all doom & gloom, so much there these days & what is there is very very busy indeed.

it is just a coding error. Mind you, Gas Factory Junction could be a euphemism for something smelly!
It would be interesting to know if they show the sidings at Gidea Park, Paddington etc

It might not be a coding error, it is possible it's because Electrostar (and the 345 is still very much an Electrostar TMS last time I saw it) has a PIS system that gets easily confused when starting a "route" not from the first station.

I've found this myself coming out a depot and into service at the first station, that if I set up the PIS in the depot it's 50/50 if the train regards the first door release as the first station, or the location I logged in as the first station (and as a result is one station ahead for the entire route)

Any Crossrail drivers able to comment?

What route would the Midland Railway have taken to access the short line into their goods depot?
I would hazard a guess across the North London Line and down via Channel Sea Junction. The MR also had seemingly isolated goods yards at West India Docks and Poplar docks, which again would likely have been accessed via North London Line down through Victoria Park and Devons Road, the loco depot at Devons Road also being a Midland establishment in later times (1D).

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that when they were testing the 345s to and from Ilford / Chadwell Heath, they would be coded to run to Gas Factory Junction to reverse, thereby freeing up Stratford platform 5 and capacity towards Liverpool Street.

may be in the system as they have traveled along it i believe to act as test units for the c2c 720's for stuff like platform clearences and alike

As stated earlier, until through running from Stratford to the core started last week there was always a scheduled service operating as a standby service for the evening peak, standing spare from approx. 16.20 until 19.15, Monday to Friday. This train would stand on the single line between Bow Junction and Gas Factory Junction - the 9-car stop board is located just on the south side of the bridge crossing Bow Road.

Since through running started this standby train has been scheduled to stand at Liverpool Street platform 17. I have noticed an occasional 345 reverse on the single line in the last week, possibly where they’ve not been able to transition between signal systems at Stratford.

Thanks both, that makes much sense

Ah so I guess that’s what happened here, train had a hissy fit and they decided to try the fleetcode to make the computer system do something

That’s intriguing. Any other hidden/non-public use destinations that anyone knows of?

I've recently seen trains sitting in the Gidea Park sidings showing "Not In Service, next stop Gas Factory Junction" on the side displays.
