Garswood to Manor Road

Hi Forum Members

Just a quick question regarding the Fare for this Journey.
Having just moved house to between Rainford and Billinge I will now have to commute when Office Based from a Merseyside Station to Manor Road.
This week I have had two business trips away from the office so buying a weekly ticket is not a financially viable option.

My journey can start at a number of options;

Rainford Junction - £7.55 Anytime Day Return (SDR)
Earlestown - £7.10 SDR
Newton-Le-Willows - £7.30 SDR
Garswood - £10:40 SDR

is there any reason why the Garswood Fare (as a Merseyside Station) has such a higher fare than other stations in the area?

The fare between Garswood and Manor Road is disproportionately high but it is nothing new (having checked the fares from 10 years ago).

There is a big jump after St Helens Junction. So much so, it is cheaper to "split" there, despite the fare for the short hop between Garswood and St Helens Junction being quite high (as very short distance fares typically are). Trainsplit finds a cheaper split, at Roby, though not all trains call there.

The Off Peak Day return (CDR) isn't bad value though.

Do you mean St Helens Central? (Junction is on the Liverpool-Manchester line, Garswood and Central are adjacent stations on the Wigan line). In any case it's surprising that the big jump happens at Garswood which is still within the Merseyside PTE area.

The Off Peak Day return (CDR) isn't bad value though.

Although only 10p cheaper than the Saveaway which would give unlimited off-peak bus, train and ferry travel across Merseyside for the day.

Thanks for the replies ... somewhat disappointed that this is the cost for Peak travel. Garswood would be my preference as my partner passes it on the way to her work and timings would work quite well. Might have to drive and park somewhere then. Is it possible and is there any benefit in getting a season ticket splitting at Roby. If I enquire about a season ticket to Manor Road it just say none are available which is I guess because it is covered by the Trio arrangement?

Incidentally, I went from NLW to Nottingham this week, arrived at NLW at 0725 with no Car Park Spaces and every side street full. Must be awful to live there and will be even more problematic I guess when the interchange is fully functional. Does anyone know what time you need to arrive for a parking space??

Don’t need a Trio unless you plan on using the bus?

There are no ‘official’ season ticket prices, but you can buy Merseytravel’s All Zone Railpass which is the equivalent, which costs £32.50 for a weekly and you could use it from Rainford or Garswood.

Northern claim that multimodal tickets including the railpass (even though a railpass isn't multimodal...) are ineligible for delay compensation too. I doubt this legal but there it is. Not necessarily something which will influence your decision but you may want to know.
