Garsdale Query

Hi everyone,

This summer we visited Garsdale station for the first time in 30 years and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what this is. As a wild guess I'm wondering if it acted as a shelter for a brazier which heated a water column but it really is only a wild guess.

Without the aid of the picture (the size is just above 4MB) it's the open brick built structure at the Dent end of the island platform that I'm referring to.

This dates from 1983 but, assuming this shows the mystery object, I doubt it has changed much.

It looks rather like it could be a former coal bunker/box although can't really say for certain, sorry.

Here's another one from early 1984 (I think) and, oh look, it's got coal in it!



It also includes Bernard Staite and David Ward. Perhaps they were trying to decide if the NRM support crew could nick the coal?

It may well have served as a coal bunker both for braziers for the two water cranes (one on the up line, one on the

branch line at the Dent end of the platform) and for the waiting room fire on the same platform?​

It's clearly visible in photos from 1960 and 1970 in "Stations and Structures of the Settle & Carlisle Railway" by Anderson and Fox.

Another interesting pic. And note how BR's attitude to people on the line / lineside is diff from today's!

Even is station was unstaffed / unused in '84 (was it - can't recall the re-openings but I doubt they involved coal heated waiting rooms anyway?) would signal box have had a coal fired stove at least?

There were no coal fires in the waiting rooms when we visited this summer. That's not surprising given that the only member of staff at the station is the signalman!
