Game makers struggle with Welsh station

The name Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch has to be squeezed into just one "square" on the new Royal Wedding Isle of Anglesey special edition of Monopoly.

But the station is called Llanfairpwll, as confirmed by all of ATW and NR's publicity and station signs.

And the village is called Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll (sometimes seen written as one word but properly it's two), as confirmed by road signs and every map I've ever seen.

Believe me, I've been there (been stranded there against my will without a working phone after dark, in fact). The made-up tourist name is just that.

The publicity stunt wa sin the last century, if not ealrier than that. Most people should have no difficulty in comprehending Llanfair PG, which is a common enough abbrevation for the place!

And helps distinguish it from Llanfair DC or Llanfair TH, which can be just as problematic in their full version for visitors as Llanfair PG.

Llanfair DC and Llanfair TH are not very well known as they have no station although Llanfair DC 'may' have had one when the line from Ruthin to Corwen was open.

I don't know, but what with Welsh having a strictly phonetic one-to-one correspondence between letters and sounds you never need a pronunciation guide to Welsh words. English however...

Yes. Not to the extent that it occupies my mind, but it is nevertheless. Such a sign has no place on a station, anywhere, and I can't imagine a similar sign ever appearing on any English station, no matter how arcane the pronunciation of the place name (and, as Eagle says, English pronunciation is a lot less logical than Welsh).

Yeah, dd, ff, ll... very easy to understand if you've never heard anyone pronounce them before.

Some languages use different letters for different sounds. Get over it. :P

As I say, Welsh spelling is as consistent and simple as it's possible to get.

I'm a guard on the WHR and we were discussing welsh spellings not too long ago. Somebody said that as long as you know the welsh alphabet you can pronounce anything!

Llanfair DC station half a mile away,(now a B&B) Rhos WX had two stations.
