I receive a weekly e-mail concerning the weekend weather. The one that came two hours ago stated:-

Saturday will bring a cloudy and wet start to Britain. Winds will develop throughout the day, especially in Northern Ireland.

Current forecast put central and northern Scotland right in the firing line. Unless the forecast changes I can see a shutdown of much of Scotrail's network being in force again on Monday.

They have - e.g. 05.30 To Tarbert (Harris) sailing 19.00 on Sunday instead! Wouldn't fancy Tarbert to Uig on Monday - sitting off Uig pier while Captain decides if he can dock, before he decides it is too rough and sails back across the Minch to Tarbert with his passengers still on board. No thanks!!!

Impossible to say... The met office say there is still a lot of uncertainty about how bad things will get, but I think the risk of disruption will increase the further north you go.

This is a different smaller storm - so just coincidence. Incidentally the Met office's latest charts put it further out to the west on Monday, so the peak winds might not be until Tuesday.

They still seem to be struggling to nail this one down with any certainty.

If the storm is within a 1,000 mile radius of the wires, they'll probably come down. They might decide to fall down regardless.

Actually, they seem to have been pretty good recently haven't they? Plenty of other problems to mess up the ECML, but not overhead wires to blame.

Just seen the latest forecast. It looks like the full brunt will be just in time for the evening rush hour - so I'm seriously thinking about driving to work tomorrow - that way I know I will get home regardless of the Scottish rail network's inability to deal with normal weather conditions that occur several times a year

I fear this is set up for a repeat of the one at the end of May.

Just watched the local weather and there are gusts of upto 80mph forecast for North East England, during the evening rush hour. Better keep an eye out on the ECML aswell.

Scotrail have also issued their advanced warning:

Weather Warning 12th September
Weather forecasters have issued a storm warning from late morning on Monday 12 September covering much of Scotland.

ScotRail advises customers to check our website before travel.

We are monitoring the situation and, as a precaution, have arranged to have extra staff in place for start of service on Monday.

In addition, contingency plans are in place for the introduction of temporary timetables, where appropriate, following the Met Office advising that there is the potential for 60-70 mph gusts of wind and a risk of disruption to transport due to the possibility of damage to trees and structures.

Information on these will be posted on this page if implemented.

Nice to see the industry taking note of the Met Officer warnings. Hopefully upfront contingency plans will be able to reduce any possible disruption, below what we saw in May.
