Thankfully not many seem to have a BR1B key although I have seen some trolley buffet staff and RPIs with this key - not sure why they would need it. I've even seen a guard with a drivers master key attached to his bag.

Probably the same reason why platform staff get issued, whatever that reason is. :D:D

lol there is no need mate like I said it does not violate youtubes rules so just don't get involved mate :D

You guys love my post so much that I've been told to not get involved twice :D.

Honestly I don't believe that youtube would do anything. I reported it out of conscience. I believe what they did was wrong and it did breach serious H&S Guidelines. As for getting unauthorised access to the door panel, it might have broken certain related legislation however I'm not sure about that one. I did struggle to find a reason when reporting it from the drop-down list provided.

That is one of the reason why I believe youtube is hugely irresponsible. Just look at the trainsurfer video. How many more young people will look at that video and now think that it's a cool thing to do? If youtube is not such a large organisation then it might just be OK for them sometimes to house inappropriate material, perhaps aimed at a niche audience. However when you become a place frequented by millions and billions of people, many of them of a very impressionable nature, you bear social responsibility, and I don't believe that youtube is doing that.

Finally some people might think that the ICE surfer was a legend. That is their opionion. In my mind, anyone who does not respect his/her own life is not someone who can be respected.

Do you mind I am from Surrey
I would think that is the one which the BTP ought to have been looking at here. These people had the equipment and the potential to activate the train door controls here, with the train on the move and carrying passengers. The fact that they chose not to do that in this particular isntance doesn't remove the seriousness of what could very easily have occurred.

I think the train will need to be stationary to unlock all the doors because of the dead lock which you can hear engage and disengage as the train starts and stops.

I know of a colleague who had a couple of herberts who decided to release all the train doors so that they could escape whilst the service was being held outside a station for the police to arrive.

Very stupid thing to do but I don't know why ther had to use a T Key as all they had to do is pull the emergency door release.

Your plane would probably have been diverted to meet the men with guns and dogs! Sadly, we are reactionary, so it will take someone to force their way into cabs, or mess around with door controls before something is done.

Quite true, unfortunately we are not just reactionary but generally spectacularly over reactionary when it comes to such things.

Legally what did the plebs do wrong? I say legally, is there a law where the people can be arrested and charged with an offence? If not this is the issue here and not the BTP doing nothing

They interfered / tampered with on-train equipment which was there specifically for staff use. I think there is a byelaw which covers this.

Tut, tut. Someone needs to read up on their railway byelaws! :D

A piece of advice, everything imaginable is a criminal offence when it's done on the railway. ;)

I agree that 11(3) is the most likely one for prosecution with 7(1) coming last. Certainly if I were the guard the train would not have moved from the next station until they left the train.

You missed 11(1) from your comprehensive list. ;) :p

Well, I guess electric locking of the panels is one way forward, which would allow lost keys to be removed from the system - but they don't call the T-key locks "budget locks" for no reason, and implementing an electronic system wouldn't be without some considerable costs. Not to mention that you've got the possibility of a guard getting onto a train and finding out that it doesn't recognise their new electronic keyfob/card, and that they can't open the doors!

Reminds me of the Diggers At Work programme that I saw the other week where the digger wouldn't start up and then after too many failed attempts, the driver was locked out for 30 mins or so...can just imagine the annoucements now...We are sorry to announce that the xx:xx service to yyyy in cancelled. This is due to the guard being beaten by the onboard computer" :D

You might well be right there, there was a discussion about door release on the move a while ago, can't remember what was said about Desiro's though. I'm not sure whether you get no response at all, or if you might an emergency brake application. Either way though, there's still a danger there as the train will be stationary at some point during the journey. There's also a Driver/Guard buzzer in there, which if they mess with it would force the Driver to stop the train and investigate.

As for the escaping herberts, I've no idea why they didn't use a door release, perhaps they thought it more amusing to access the panel, or perhaps they were just too stupid to notice they existed

Good thing about the Tyne and Wear Metro is that there isn't a door control panel that is obvious - it is hidden away nicely (not telling you where though). Apparently they were going to introduce them but a) the locks were too expensive and b) people had a habit of putting superglue into them.
