I’ve been flagged for travel irregularity based on travel history in my Trainline account to which I have responded if they can provide details. I should have just ignored if only I found about this page before.

What they’ve cited is true. Should I fess up and pay or can I ignore with now me doing the right thing and pay the correct fare moving forwards?

Thanks

Please show us suitably redacted versions of correspondence, and how/when/why you think you received it.
It may just be a fishing attempt based on some kind of analysis of purchase histories and you should know that buying tickets isn’t ever an offence, you can buy tickets for other people, it’s the use of invalid tickets that’s problematic.

If nothing else, we’d advise you to use just about anyone else than Trainline in future, including this site’s purchase site. If nothing else, Trainline charges fees for many transactions which others don’t.

I’ve deleted the original email but the attachment was for my Trainline account. It doesn’t state in there what irregularities have been detected.

What, exactly, did you say by reply? It's very important because if you've said anything incriminating you are in trouble. Never ever reply to these emails.

Good, so it looks like you have not incriminated yourself.

If you stick to your line that there are no irregularities when they respond to you, there is not much they can do, but you are now on their radar so, as you said earlier, need to make absolutely sure you pay the correct fare at all times in future.

Let’s not discuss what else you might have done.

Thanks. They have now responded with this. Is it best to ignore? Or now confess?

Your response is incriminating, because you admit to places where you started your journey. Bad idea! They know where you live, they know the journeys you do, and you no longer have any plausible deniability having given a reasonably detailed reply to them. You have been caught out by saying you started at Shenfield; your tickets are not scanned there, and you appear to be buying while on the train into London, which over a sustained period, identifies this as a lie.

You should never ever reply to any of these emails, because no matter what you say, replying invites further correspondence and a more probing question, which, if you refuse to answer (having answered others and otherwise been cooperative), implies guilt in the mind of a reasonable person.

In my view you should aim to settle this.

What would you suggest my response to them would be with the aim to settle this? Appreciate your response.

You admit to having shortfared so ethically you now ought to pay up. If you do ignore it now, then there is a slim chance it might come back to bite you at some future date.
I would just reply listing the shortfared you have done and ask for a settlement figure.

You have incriminated yourself in this post. Take down the response and redact the station names. Anyone reading the forum can easily match your post to the attached email and the outstanding case.

Good, so it looks like you have not incriminated yourself.
Unfortunately, they may have done to readers of the forum.

There is still a visible ref number in the docs attached to post #3 that I can see. I suspect you could remove those attachments as people have seen that and given you advice

Just to be clear that if you engage with Greater Anglia they will offer you a settlement which will cost the value of the fares avoided at the full Anytime rate plus an admin fee, with no credit given for the invalid tickets you did purchase.

If you ignore GA then they will continue to send threatening letters. These will threaten escalation, police and prosecution for fraud. It's unlikely that they have sufficient evidence to do any of this but you need to be aware that the letters will continue for the forseeable future. It is also possible that GA might decide to pursue the case via the civil courts.

I will really have a think. How would they be able to get my details? For me to receive a letter in the post?

They will likely correspond by email, but they will likely have your address from your payment method or your ticket purchasing account.

What would you suggest my response to them would be with the aim to settle this? Appreciate your response.
I think they now have enough on you to further investigate you. I’d recommend engaging further. It’s very difficult to justify suddenly ceasing correspondence once the questions about - what the data will tell them - is your obvious travel fraud, once the questions get very difficult like the ones they’ve sent.

If you simply ignore everything from the outset you’re fine, but responding in the way you did implies guilt; you know exactly what looked suspicious about your purchases and why.

Understood I think this is the right way to what could I respond to not further incriminate me but also saying I’m going to be paying the penalties?
Through your Trainline account.
thank you. I’ve come to a conclusion that I will be confessing up. Do you have a suggestion on how I go about it? Very ashamed and clearly lesson learned.
