Hi,
I was stopped by a ticket inspector today and I was using an incorrect railcard, and have done on several occasions. They scanned my ticket however didn’t issue me a fine as I got off the train. I bought the ticket through uber and was wondering what to expect and if I can avoid any fine.
Thanks

Only a court can impose a fine.

Did the ticket inspector take your details such as name and address?

You can expect to hear from GreaterAnglia, either by post or by email, in the next few months, possibly as long as 6 months. They will be notifying you of their intention to prosecute, but will very likely either offer you a settlement straight away, or ask you for your version of events, following which again they will likely offer you a settlement.

Once a settlement is paid that’s the end of the matter, no court, no criminal record.

It’s likely that they will look through your ticket purchasing history and charge you the undiscounted Anytime fare for every journey you’ve made with an incorrect railcard, plus a roughly £150 admin fee on top. Don’t delete your account, this doesn’t help the situation, they can still access the records. You should however immediately stop evading fares.

Keep an eye on your post and email and let us know when they get in touch and we can help further. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have.

They didn’t take any of my details but they did scan my ticket. I’m assuming this then be tracked back to me I’m just wondering how.

Can they claim historic tickets were used incorrectly as you ca purchase a train ticket on behalf of someone else?
They couldn’t prosecute for them, but they don’t need to, the threat of prosecuting you for the one time you were stopped is all they need as leverage to get you to pay for them all.
