So you are saying you scan your "ticket" before 10.00 to catch a train circa 10.05. Before 10.00, the Railcard discount wouldn't be allowed. After 10.00 it is. Hence the claim for missed fares . . As you say, it takes x minutes to get to the platform, especially if train door close xx seconds before it departs. Of course in winter weather, one has to take extra care, as surfaces maybe icy etc....So can the train operator prove you took a train before 10.00? You make a valid point as to why people buy paper tickets. Bought a few off Peak tickets over the years. Bought 10 minutes before validity, reject at the barrier, tell the gate person which train, get let through.. But no-one can trawl my travel history.

Is it worth noting that BR fares gives a connection time of 5 minutes at Tottenham Hale ... So how exactly is one expected not to touch in before 10am on the downside entrance to catch a train departing on the upside that departs at 10.05 when there seems to be a policy of closing doors 40 seconds before advertised departure time .

Or indeed Harlow Town which has a connection time of 3 minutes and comprises of 2 island platforms with loops on the outer faces ...so certainly involves the use of stairs

Post 3 suggests the OP has acknowledged that he/she is the traveller.

Would a less than crystal clear statement made via email and not under caution, be sufficient for a conviction? I don’t think it would.

I am not aware of anything in law or the railway's rules which requires this - although in my opinion as well, the railway ought to do this.

I don't want to derail the thread, but I'm referring to the requirement (mentioned previously on the forum) that anyone investigating a criminal offence with a view to potentially prosecuting "have regard" to the code of practice provided for the police under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996, and in particular that "the investigator should pursue all reasonable lines of inquiry, whether these point towards or away from the suspect". But as the Post Office demonstrated, with minimal external oversight possible, I think enforcement relies upon the honesty of the organisation concerned.

There are 2 flights of steps and a short footbridge between. The OP's description of it as a maze seems a little exaggerated, but using the barriers at 0957/58 for a 1001 train seems perfectly reasonable.

I also note that the 0958/1001 departures have only applied since the timetable change; previously they were at 1001/1005 (soirce: NR PDF public timetable) and both trains would have been exempt the £12 minimum.

It is remarkable that GA have uncovered so many discrepancies in so short a time (including Christmas!).
