Indeed, research showed even a cardboard cutout of a policeman deters shoplifters.
Even a picture of a pair of eyes will make people act more honestly.
The feeling of being watched makes people act more honestly, even if the eyes are not real, a study suggests.
A Newcastle University team monitored how much money people put in a canteen "honesty box" when buying a drink. They found people put nearly three times as much in when a poster of a pair of eyes was put above the box than when the poster showed flowers.

Just another point: Back in the days of G4S, some of the (rather better!!!) members of Northern's actual revenue department used to mix in with the G4S lot. Now everyone is wearing those yellow vests (which makes me mistake them for TPE station staff sometimes) - are these all ex-G4S staff? Does everybody wearing those work for STM?

Anyway contractors are variable. G4S were bad - STM well it remains to be seen. You should see some of the numpties TfGM hire for Metrolink!

Virgin are to fit ticket gates at Piccadilly, Stockport, Macclesfield, Crewe and Stoke stations so there could be less need for Northern RPIs in the future.

Although I imagine platform 0 at Stockport will be left without barriers due to how difficult it would be to include all the platforms with a single set of barriers and as no Virgin services call at platform 0, not including platform 0 would be the obvious solution.

Stockport is a Virgin managed station, so I would have thought the agreement with DfT would require gates to be fitted on all platforms, not just those used by Virgin's own trains.

Even if there are only barriers on the stairs to the island platforms, there will still be chaos when the signallers switch a train between Platform 0 and Platform 1/2 just before arrival, as often happens when there are delays.

I wonder if the barriers at Piccadilly and Stockport will be able to recognise the validity of TfGM ENCTS passes for journeys in the TfGM area?

I was thinking the only place you can install a set of barriers at Stockport which would cover all the platforms would put the ticket office and TVMs the wrong side of the barriers, so you'll definitely need multiple sets of barriers to cover all platforms. With platform 0 having a smaller number of passengers and a number of them joining the South TPE and EMT services on that platform arrive on another service I'm not sure what the cost-effectiveness of barriers there would be.

The Stockport subway will have to remain an open access area so that passengers entering the west entrance from Station Road (which has the short stay car park) can still get to the ticket office or TVMs on the east side of the line. The lifts to Platforms 1/2 and 3/4 are on the opposite side of the subway to the stairways, so separate sets of ticket gates will be needed for the lifts and stairs. I suppose it might be possible to subdivide the subway into three separate narrow gangways so that transit passengers can move between the island platforms without going through two gates, but there might be Health and Safety objections to that. Otherwise four separate sets of gates will be needed, or five if Platform 0 is also gated.

Ticket gates need staff in attendance at all times to help passengers who need assistance, so do not necessarily reduce costs compared with manual ticket inspection. They work best with station layouts where a single barrier can control access to all platforms.

There will have to be multiple gatelines anyway because of the Edgeley entrance - no? Or if the subway is a public right of way (which has caused issues at Sheffield), the Guildford solution perhaps (everyone carries a 'bridge pass' between the two gatelines).

And as for the various ITSO concessionary passes, I'm sure they will have to be accepted eventually because get me theres will!

Do Stockport City Council put a Definitive Map online?

That's the way to check re the subway.

20 years of unrestricted use and a dozen people to sign that theyy have done thus is all that is needed.

Whereabouts will the gates at Piccadilly be situated?

I always got told the reason there were no barriers was because Network Rail didn't want them. So if they do get installed thats quite a big back down
