Diddnt I read somewhere the economic life of a dmu was 30year's and an emu 40 year's.
Many of the pre privatization units must be nearing end of economic life.

Was this a "paper" clearance in that Network Rail looked for any clearance differences between a 442 and the straightforward Mk3 hauled stock (and at periods HSTs) that has been running in and out of Euston for decades, and found there weren't any? Or did they actually take a 442 to Euston to see if it fitted? Of course Euston is one of the very few places outside former Southern Region territory that a third-rail only EMU might be some use as-is. Lets start a rumour that LO will be taking them, after all they've been linked with every other TOC by now.

iirc the 3rd rail runs out not that far out of Euston, the LO trains switch to AC shortly after departing Euston. (I wouldn't be surprised to see that short section of 3rd rail get replaced at some point with OLE)

You recall incorrectly, they run on DC all the way to Watford.

Wires out of Euston go all the way to Scotland, and 3rd rail goes all the way to Watford.

The only 'short stretch' that SpacePhoenix could be thinking of is the tracks approaching the throat that are dual electrified, before the approach tracks split into fasts/slows/DC at Camden Junction.
