Are there any routes you'd like to see coming up in the future?
I'd like Glasgow-Euston stopping services, as well as Virgin Trains Euston-Inverness/Aberdeen. I'm also in favor of Windemere-Weymouth via Manchester, Heald Green, Crewe, and Birmingham. Finally I would like to see Brighton-Glasgow Airport via City Thameslink, Peterborough, Stockport, Manchester Victoria and the WCML.
Thoughts? Any more?

A bridge across the Baring Straits with a link to the Trans-Siberian one end and Alaska/Canada the other so we could go from St.Pancras to New York's Grand Central by train.

(could even have a slow 'all stations' service' - I'll have a single from Westenhanger to Bridgeport , Connecticut please)

Have you just thrown pins at a map and decided to create a route between the points?

If that's the case you clearly haven't been adventurous enough. I would like to see a Runcorn East to Ascot service going to Warrington, Settle, Carlisle, Barrow, Lancaster, Clitheroe, Wakefield, Doncaster, Corby, Bedford, Disneyland, Bushey, Willesden Jct, Reading West and Martins Heron. With additional bi-hourly extensions to Scandanavia and St Austells left nostril.

Yep I think that would work.

Glasgow to Edinburgh via Stirling, Alloa, Dunfermline the Fife Circle.

No-one, bar an enthusiast perhaps, would use the service end to end - but it would open fresh travelling opportunites between central Scotland & the Kingdom.

It would also be the only service that crosses two of the Forth Bridges.

I want that, but via the Swansea District Line. And Clitheroe would be set down only northbound...

Given the title states that the route must be viable (which most clearly aren't), I'd like an alternative Bristol to Brighton service - but rather than the current one via Southampton, I'd like an extension of the North Downs route at both ends. It would give Brighton better links to Redhill, and better links between Gatwick and the West (i.e. no changes necessary). I think some 172s running this pattern would be ideal:

Bristol TM - Keynsham - Saltford - Oldfield Park - Bath Spa - Corsham - Chippenham - Swindon - Didcot Parkway - Reding - Wokingham - North Camp - Guildford - Dorking Deepdene - Reigate - Redhill - Gatwick Airport - Three Bridges - Haywards Heath - Brighton

(The local service west of Chippenham is intended to provide additional capacity on the Bath - Bristol corridor, and also a new station at Corsham without the need to make anything else go that way.)

Not another fantasy service thread!

Even I'm getting bored of this stuff. And I used to be the one making these threads!

Do you really think any of those would be viable?

MK-Reading or Northampton-Newbury semi-fasts via WCML and GWML to give extra commuter services in the Home counties for flows to Watford, Slough etc that don't NEED to go via Euston, Paddington and the Circle line and take some of the outer-suburban riders off busy Euston and Paddington suburbans

You could do it with a 172...

Or

How about a pair of re-engined 73s topping and tailling Some refurbed Mark 2s?

Well I would like to see a

  • Colne, Burnley, Blackburn, Bolton, Manchester to London
  • Blackpool, Preston to London
  • Barrow/Windermere, Lancaster to London
  • Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Telford, Birmingham to London

Just a few fantasy routes that once used to run, but for some reason do not run any more.

Agreed. I don't think a Brighton-Manchester service would be at all far-fetched either. Maybe 1tph to each destination, with more frequent (and some express) services at peak times.

Aside from usage of the North Downs Line - a somewhat favourite subject with me ;) - I shall refine another of my proposals. Think of a line from somewhere in Essex to Reading, via a new Thames crossing, Bromley, East Croydon, Kingston and Heathrow.

This would have connections to an LU line (somewhere!), the DLR, direct Gatwick services, Tramlink and of course Heathrow Airport's various lines. There would be a junction South<->East at East Croydon. You'd have extra capacity on top of Crossrail, with the potential for services between the West Country and Wales, Reading & Heathrow and Norwich, Ipswich, Harwich and so on. With the South<->East junction, there would be potential for Portsmouth Harbour, Southampton, Brighton, Horsham, Gatwick and Redhill to East Anglia (etc.). I call this Crossrail 3.

An additional option for this route would be a link to the ELL (and other Overground lines at Dalston Junction) en-route, possibly with a North<->West junction at East Croydon.

A natural complementary route would be formed by a spur between North Camp on the North Downs Line and Heathrow Airport, thereby initiating Heathrow<->Gatwick services, with a double-track South<->West connection to the Crossrail 3 route. The North Downs Line would have to be quadrupled, possibly throughout, although initially only Redhill-Heathrow. Dorking Main and Dorking Deepdene should be joined with the old spur, as well as any further additions, with the stations combined, and two tracks of the line would have to be diverted to avoid useful but lightly-used stations such as Betchworth, Chilworth and Gomshall, some of which would need their buildings preserved. I have previously detailed potential solutions for remodelling Redhill station on other threads, and adding a new station under the A25 between Redhill and Reigate.

My thought is 'why do you think these are viable?'

Couple of viable services here.
Bridlington to Manchester via Hull
Lincoln/Grimsby to Leeds (May not be any capacity)
Linclon to Cardiff
Just a couple that could be well used

Expand and double track the Canonbury curve and run LO to Finsbury Park. Make capacity by rebuilding the old platform to the West of 5 and 6 and let LO use the soon to be reinstated platform 1, and provide service to Drayton Park. Might not even require double tracking if trains can pass at Drayton Park.

Something I feel would be useful and reasonably likely to happen one day? The much fabled Nottingham-Oxford (avoiding Birmingham) service. Nottingham - Loughborough - Leicester - Nuneaton - Coventry - (Kenilworth) - Leamington - Banbury - Oxford should see plenty of people using it.
A lot of work would need to be done between Nuneaton and Leamington Spa for it ever to happen, but I think there is a genuine case for a more direct link between the East Midlands and Oxfordshire.

I'm not sure the tunnel at Canonbury Curve could have 2 electrified lines, please correct my mistake if I'm wrong

Overnight sleeper services from St Pancras International to Germany.

Direct international services from the north to France/Belgium.

Which, of course, were both supposed to happen.

No it couldn't, not with the current OHLE. It was previously double tracked to allow services from Welwyn and Potters Bar to go to Broad Street but this was removed once Broad Street closed (I'm not really sure what the intention in doing so and installing OHLE was). I wonder if it would be possible with traction to redouble it. Nevertheless, as I said, it might not be necessary.

What we could do, is a sleeper going from edinburgh to paris, Leaving edinburgh at about 7, then going along the ECML to retford, then turning off down the robin hood line to nottingham, down the MMl to STP, and then along HS1. With a bit of luck and 125mph stock, it could pick up from STP around midnight and then go to paris/europe for the morning.
