Marshlink: Three Oaks ~10k, Doleham ~3k, Winchelsea ~10k, Rye ~475k, Appledore ~40k, Ham Street ~90kThey're both 25 miles of unelectrified track and see more or less similar passenger numbers.
Oxted: Edenbridge T: ~300k, Hever ~50k, Cowden ~50k, Ashurst ~40k, Eridge ~120K, Crowborough ~350k, Buxted ~120k, Uckfield ~450k (Pre-Covid Annual Avg Entry/Exit).
Total Marshlink Passenger numbers: ~628k, Oxted (Uckfield branch): 1,480k.
The Uckfield branch serves more than 2x as many people on the stations it serves alone. Not forgetting that Uckfield services also offer the fast service from Oxted to London as well as serving the East Croydon-London Bridge on the way, whereas Marshlink serves Eastbourne and Hastings with another stopping service. It's just not in the same league.
Also, electrifying Uckfield would avoid placing stress on a heavily laden power system in inner London as well as smooth out paths in a vey congested part of the network by allowing uniform performance (171s are slightly slower off the mark as DMUs). Although there is scope to charge the batteries East Croydon-Oxted and in the downtime at London Bridge, it's still operationally tight. Whereas Eastbourne-Hastings is fine for a unit to slowly charge up on the way.
No it doesn't, there's not enough pointwork to get from Marshlink to HS1 without shunting. And by the time you've doddled along on the single line into Hastings you're not going to be much time up on the existing service. HS1 to Hastings died when Amber Rudd left parliament. If anything, you would electrify the Marshlink line more as that opens the doors for HS1 services into Rye and Hastings.
