Just chiming in here on the Hadfield run - alongside the ROSCO, Northern is supporting exploratory work which is taking place to determine whether Class 350 trains would be suitable for deployment on routes in the north of England. At present there is no commitment from Northern to operate Class 350 trains in the future.

Hope this helps to clear things up. :)
At present. That may or may not change of course. Either way, thanks for letting us know :)

ITS, Maybe also possibility as announced on another thread, due to Wmr/lnwr going under government control 1st February 2026, next year, just a possibility Manchester to Stoke services, could well be combined with Wmr services from Stoke and onwards to Stafford and Maybe to Birmingham for extra capacity.

Also the Stafford to Crewe service could easily be extended, to Manchester Airport and then to Liverpool Lime Street via Manchester Piccadilly, Combining and connecting services together for example.

323s could quite well stay, alongside 3502,

Interesting to see what could happen, with these two ex tocs under Government control.

From the test runs, it's obviously certain something is in the pipeline and , very interested, parties from both sides, means 3502s. Stand a very fair chance of being used somewhere in the North West and Cheshire and Staffordshire and West midlands areas , on lines tested, or combination of services together as mentioned above.

There was recent talk of consolidating two services to remove a third, thus saving money, and freeing up LNR trains and crew for West Coast Mainline work.

Northern Manchester - Crewe being extended via Alsager through to Stoke, and Northern's Manchester - Stoke being extended via Stone to Stafford, both calling at Longport.

Not sure if it will amount to anything yet.

Yes, news wise the exactly the same talks, and news of future usage for 3502s doing its rounds in Warwickshire of where I live close to Long Marston, also of where a Porterbrook manager works at and has ex links with Northern and West Midlands, and 3502 expertise knowledge, of possible connections from the recent talks.

Plus this manager has run many appraisals and great respect for rail live events at Long Marston, for introducing Youngsters at Schools ie primary schools, to enable them to start to become interested and involved to become our next generation of rail engineers.

However on another note but as mentioned in other mk5 speculation threads from my area since February 2024, the mk5 talks and speculation for chiltern came to a reality and to the point.

It's a very good chance the 3502s will with Northern, as mentioned above, it's possible the 3502 to Hadfield sandbags trial run on Sunday 27th July 2025, was done as a time trial, a fully loaded rush hour passenger test run, for a full evaluation to see how it could cope under heavy laiden running on the branch, and also up the bank especially from Broadbottm to Dinting.

That would make a lot of sense, and shouldn't be too much of an issue aside from getting the Crewe terminators into a through service. Stafford - Crewe via Stoke-on-Trent has always been a bit of an outlier in the LNWR network.

I'd like to think that could come to something, as that seems like a genuinely sensible proposition to lend some utility to the current Stafford - Stoke - Crewe stub of a service that's been left over from assorted timetable revisions.

https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/class-331-at-stoke-on-trent.246365/page-2#post-6175912 shows 309 624 which is similar length I think just fitting. This unit is now preserved as a 3-car set. 4-car AM10/class 310 similar length, 4-car AM4/304 were slightly shorter, they both used the bay for years.
319s could also fit in the bay at Stoke, but 319s only barely fit in the bay at Stoke.

319s had to be driven up to the buffers in order to fit.

4 cars on Stoke stoppers at off peak times would be over kill, but it would be nice to have all Northern services to stoke be stock which has Air Conditioning.

An issue would be Saturdays at Christmas, during Christmas on Saturdays Northern runs 6 cars on Stoke stoppers, I don't think all stations on the route to stoke fit 8 car trains.

As far as I've read on here the 350/2s only have unit deselect and not SDO/ASDO, but I'm guessing ASDO/SDO might get fitted to the 350/2s if the 350/2s went to Northern.

TPE did indeed call at Manchester Oxford Road with 2 x 350s at 8 car length, it just about fit the platforms (2 and 4).

One other thing to mention as well, there was also another previous test train that ran with a Class 350/2 between Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street via Newton-le-Willows, I remember seeing it on RealTimeTrains and was done overnight, happened about a year or so ago. The unit went back to Crewe after the test.
That happened back in January of this year.

The 350/2s regularly call at stations where only the doors on the first 4 coaches open (Rugeley TV for example), the PIS onboard shows coach numbers and can make annoucements for people to move forward to the front 4 coaches - having the corridor connection between units make that relatively straightforward

Thanks for clarifying, I was sure it was (within) the last year at least.
Your welcome.

Thats that problem solved.

Hopefully the trial goes well and Northern take the 350/2s, as 8 car trains would really help on some services at busy times of the year.

I guess wether Northern take the 350/2s may in part come down to can the 350/2s keep to the tight timetables the 323s operate.

Unit deselect works on trains that aren't busy at stations where not many people are getting off.
I think it would probably be best if proper SDO could be installed. Using only 4 of 8 when 6 fit would be disapointing

8 car trains would be a gamechanger for capacity, but the back carriage would probably be rarely accomodated except at big stations.

For Manchester Airport - Blackpool North, the platform lengths are (Bold stations are 160m), the amount of 20m carriages usable each way is in for stations shorter than 8 carriages
Manchester Airport - P1 197m, P2 200m, P3 200m, P4 201m.

When was the last time that trains longer than 140m operated to these stations? That might give the answer.
I think plenty of them were extended to fit 6 car 331 (144m), which means they fit 6 car 323 (140m).
Some of the data above is definitely wrong (e.g. Salford Crescent, which is ~150m) but it would be a lot of work to check all of them more manually.

Is Google Maps distance measurer accurate for doing this

Salford Crescent P1 is 158m, P2 is 153m. I think you're correct in suggesting a few of those figures are wrong unfortunately, the sectional appendix is probably your best bet: https://sacuksprodnrdigital0001.blob.core.windows.net/sectional-appendix/Sectional Appendix full PDFs June 2025/London North Western (North) Sectional Appendix June 2025.pdf

I agree installing proper SDO would be best, why lock the doors on a full unit out of service when 6 or 7 of the cars can fit on platforms.

8 car trains would be a gamechanger for capacity,
They sure would be with Northern, going from 6 car to 8 car trains in the North West would be a huge upgrade.

Shame the North East would be stuck with 6 car trains on Northern services, but that can't be helped.

Not like for like 6 and 8 car trains though. 6 x 24m is 144m. 8 x 20m is 160m. So an upgrade, but not really a huge one.

I am reading all the posts about extending the 350/2s or taking away a carriage. In my view, I don't think that Porterbrook will make any alterations to the 350/2s that would end up costing them a lot of money and a lot of time to refurbish the fleet, which would mean that they would lose money not leasing out the fleet even sooner.

Bad idea. Timekeeping at the Liverpool end is far from perfect, but it was even worse when there were Crewe/Manchester?Liverpool services.

I also can't see Porterbrook paying for all the work needed to remove or add coaches to the 350/2s, and thats if adding/removing coaches is even possible.

Porterbrook are clearly trying to get the 350/2 on lease ASAP, the Glossop Line trial and the Crewe to Manchester Airport trial are proof of that.

A few thoughts on all of this:
- I would have thought that the 331/1s would be more well suited for the Manchester Piccadilly to Hadfield services, although I can see why Northern would trial the 350s on that route as it can be quite challenging with the frequent stops, gradients and need for punctuality as Dinting to Hadfield is effectively one long single-track section. Although aren’t there some sighting issues for checking whether the doors are all shut at Dinting with the 331/1s?

- Should it happen, running eight carriage 350 formations on Manchester Airport to Blackpool North services would be absolutely excellent.

- I doubt that the 350s will trigger an internal cascade to replace the 333s. The 333s are having quite a lot of time and money being spent on them at the moment and it has been said recently that it is Northern’s intention to replace them with the second tranche of new rolling stock, circa 2035-2040.

- I doubt that some or all of the 350s would have a carriage taken out. A 3 carriage, 60m long trains simply wouldn’t be long enough on its own and Northern, especially around the Northwest do not need any more fleet complexity.

- Regarding a potential refurbishment and the debate of what seating pattern they should have, I’d say that they should have both 3+2 seating and 2+2 seating with armrests and tables, akin to what Southern’s Class 377s have, given that would be the closest comparable use of rolling stock. I.e. 80m/160m long trains operating both suburban services and interregional services to the seaside.

Regarding seating all I think that if Northern do take on the 350/2s the old first class section will be removed and replaced with more standard class seating.

Can't see Northern keeping the small 24 seat First Class section on the 350/2s, given capacity could be increased by replacing First Class with more Standard Class seating.

Based on what happened at LNWR when first class was removed from the rest of the 350s don't hold your breath on the seats being changed.

Class 170 fleet cascaded from First Scotrail have not had their first class section removed. I understand that it is only the five units 453-457 that have those sections and the rest are standard class throughout but I have to admit, I’ve not paid much attention.

Northern kept the former first class seating in the 319/769 and class 170 fleets despite a refurbishment
