In all the talk of electrification, there's been many suggestions of wiring up parts of the Chiltern franchise and the "Thames Trains" parts of the FGW franchise.
Both of these would release a number of Clubman trains (165s at Chiltern, 165s and 166s at FGW).
But where can these units go?
Look at the maps at the end of this document

...and there's not a lot of places outside the Thames Valley/Chiltern lines that they could work on.
A couple of examples are the Leeds - Harrogate - York line amd the Saltburn/ Middlesbrough/ Darlington/ Sunderland/ Newcastle area routes (though not the line from Newcastle to the Metro Centre/ Hexham).
Whilst routes can obviously be amended to allow 165/166 operation, how cost effective would it be? But then, it seems daft not to find a home for these units before we can get rid of Pacers etc.

- Blue - Route already cleared
- Green: Route could potentially be cleared - Normal or Reduced clearances exist
- Red - Route cannot currently be cleared - Special Reduced or Foul clearances exist
