About a month after winning my court case with TFL I received a phone from Hays asking if I was interested in taking a contract role with TFL. My contract was coming to an end so I said yes I was interested. They told me it would be an initial phone interview and then a face to face interview. I said fine. The agency gave the time and date when TFL were going to call. I waited and waited. After about an hour I received a call from TFL saying they thought it was a face to interview. That put me right off and it was one of my worst interviews. A couple days later I got a call from Hays asking how my interview went with TFL. I laid into the agent telling him they had sent me the wrong information. I said it was one of my worst interviews as all I could think about was had I read the email correctly. He said that was strange as TFL had asked for a face to face interview. I told Hays when I would be free and asked if they would send me confirmation.
The day before the interview I had to ring Hays to find out if the interview was going ahead. They confirmed it was and sent me confirmation. It was a standard interview and I felt it went a lot better than the telephone one.
I was offered the position which I accepted. I went to Hays office and signed the contract and gave them my details. The week before I had not received the contract that I had signed so every day I called to find out what was happening. I was told the same story that they were going to send it to me.
The day I was due to start I received a call at about 10am from TFL asking where I was. I told them I had not received the signed contract and Hays had not even bothered to send me details of where I was supposed to go or who I was supposed to meet. By 4pm that day I finally received a contract and told where I was supposed to go and who I was supposed to meet.
I invoiced Hays 1 days lost work. They said they were not responsible and started making excuses. I submitted small claims for lost earnings and told TFL that I was giving 1 month noticed and explained what happened. Apparently TFL were moving from multiple agencies to a single agency unfortunately Hays at the time. I knew of other contractors who had not been paid for 3 months. My manager at TFL did try to look at other options but in the end accepted my resignation.
The position was re advertised on jobserve (see attached). The story goes that one of the technical guys wrote the technical bits and forwarded it on to his manager with these are the technical bits if anyone wants to fluff it up with the generic team player etc. That email then got forwarded onto Hays to just copied and pasted it on the jobserve advert. Somehow Hays contacted the technical guy who wrote the technical bits of the job spec and asked if he would like to work for TFL. Obviously he was working for TFL but was interested in what they were offering for the position. As it was more than what he was earning in his current contract role with TFL, he said yes.
Two weeks after I had left TFL, I received a letter saying here are your induction documents from Hays. These should have been sent before I started with TFL. I had to inform Hays that I didnt work for them or TFL.
Hays decided to settle out of court so I received nearly £600 for the lost day work. My advice is to steer clear of Hays and they are useless.
