Funny - but clearly not correct train lengths

This train will have lots of seats tonight. Makes me wonder if it was real how far outside Lincoln Central the last coach would be.

The source of the photo is from the East Midlands trains website. I won’t share the link as it will probably be gone soon.

The post states that an East Midlands train is 24 coaches instead of 3 coaches.

That is quite funny - not sure how they managed that ! according to RTT is consists of 170208 (3), 158799 (2) + 158847 (2) but the latter pairs are going to Nottingham only.

The number of coaches is manually typed, so an easy mistake to make.

I've seen LNER services saying will be formed of '1' carriage instead of '10'.

It's what happens when controllers lose track of units, or perhaps a stock controller position was left uncovered, and CIS systems are plugged into Fleet systems.
They'll be other trains running around with 0 coaches to balance.

It was actually 158799 and 847 between Barnetby and Nottingham and 170208 following a set swap to Derby. Still doesn't make 24 coaches though!

It's quite common for TOCs where unit swaps have taken place or the dividing announcements have gone a bit wrong. It is not uncommon to hear a GWR service divding at Swansea, with 'the front 10 coaches detaching at Swansea and the rear 10 coaches continuing to Carmarthen' which would make the service 20 coaches. Which, of course, it is not.

I've been at Westbury station before where a London bound IET service has been announced as having '15 coaches', with a very confused looking member of platform staff scratching his head.

I've had several occasions where an LNR service that's supposed to be 8 carriages (2 x 350) and divide at Northampton turn up as a single unit, yet still play the split announcements reminding passengers to be in the front 4 carriages.

A few years ago I caught an early morning train from Paddington to Bristol Parkway. The departure board said it was 'formed of 387 coaches'

Several years ago I travelled on a train from Gatwick Airport to Clapham Junction which the PIS and announcements said consisted of 16 coaches. Actually it was the normal 12. I posted about it on here at the time but haven't searched to find a link.

The is a 700/0 that thinks it has 12 coaches according to the PIS. Haven’t had it for a while. I think it was 700030.

Could you just imagine that a 153 doing a run down the East coast mainline at 75mph full thrash, wonder what the timings would be for that!
I don't remember the precise details now but at one point (Sectorisation era?) there was just such a working, more or less overnight, between Doncaster and Newcastle (I think) which was used as a way of moving 153s between their then maintenance base of Heaton and their usual Lincolnshire operating area. Not sure how often single vehicles appeared though. Maybe someone can confirm how well (or otherwise) I have remembered things!

I remember being at Crewe one afternoon about 3 years ago, and hearing the announcement that the next train for Chester would leave from platform 9, formed of 22 coaches. It was actually a 2-car set, which fitted comfortably in bay platform 9.

22 coaches of Pendolino on displays is rather more common if they've allocated a different set and forgotten to deallocate the previous one. Never seen 22 vice 2! :)

The 14:23 TPE service from Man Victoria to Liverpool Lime St this afternoon is stated as 5 cars (as expected). However, the pictorial shows only the middle three coaches & no driving cars! o_O

At Crewe recently I heard an announcement that said to be in the front 2 carriages for stations beyond Nottingham since "the rear carriages will detatch and terminate at Nottingham"
It was a 2 car train, where it would normally say "the rear 2 carriages" it didn't say a number of carriages.

Don't give XC any new ideas

Surely the Class 153 inspection trains thunder down at more-or-less full throttle on inspection runs?

Any time unit swaps happen around the network and the CIS isn't plugged into that via an automatic channel and/or requires a manual alteration with regards to associated services throughout the day will lead to this sort of issue.

Whereby that doubles the size of one train and turns the other to 'zero', the PA/CIS would just not announce/display coach information. It wouldn't say "formed of 0 coaches".

Always tickles me to see the PIS have a fit. Before the repurposing and resignalling of the Waterloo International side it would have fit a 15 car 444 I believe.

Then again 444s are not permitted in the international side.
