I wonder if any of our drivers on here have any amusing tales as to why they had to stop at a red by the signalman. A friend of mine was a driver for British rail way back in the 80's and had to pull up at a red signal just outside of Chorley because the farmer in the fields up ahead was burning dead animals and could he please inform the guard to warn the passengers of the smell up ahead and to point out that it was not BR's fault.

There was a post somewhere, think it was Railway Eye, of a conversation between a driver and a signalman because someone was *ahem* pleasuring themself over the edge of a railway bridge!

Yes that actually did happen a few years ago in the Birmingham area if I recall correctly, the person in question was wearing stockings and pleasuring himself to trains going by.

I did have the clip somewhere which still brings out much laughter!

Any chance you could put it up somewhere? (If you still have it)

Got stopped by the bobby one morning, 1st service down the line that day.. bobby informed the driver that the next box down the line, wasnt open yet because someone had nicked the key and the bobby couldnt get in.

Turns out that someone had broken his key in the lock and a new one had been fitted, not everyone had their own key yet so one was being left under the flowerpot by the stairs. Overnight some ne'er-do-well had taken the key and we had to wait for a manager to arrive.

Got stopped one evening at Keadby Bridge (the one over the canal) to let a narrow boat through.. apparently barges have precedence over trains

Didn't some major box on the WCML get closed once because the two signallers left the box to take delivery of a new chair and the door slammed shut behind them?

I seem to remember Rayners Lane Cabin closing all of a sudden when the signaller was arrested whilst on duty...

River traffic has priority over rail at swing bridges. The idea is that trains can stop, boats can't (not as easily, especially when going with the tide). Better to delay the train a few mins than delay the train for much longer because the boat has gone into the bridge.

Remember some years ago on a Eurostar out of York (that many years ago) and we got stopped just north of Colton Junction because of reports of a naked man on the line. Passengers were asked to keep a look out and if they saw him to point him out to their fellow passengers before informing the train crew! At the time I was with a few mates coming back from an open day at Newcastle University, but the train was mostly filled with businesy types, so we initially tried to hold in the laughter until the rest of the carriage burst out laughing, before most of them began intently looking out of the windows! Didn't see anything.

I got stopped at a peg for the bobby to give me a caution one evening. Apparently the driver ahead had struck a sofa on one of our AHB crossings and could I inspect the line.

and if it's not too badly damaged do you think you could somehow fit it onboard as he thinks it would look nice in his living room.

My train was detained because a passenger dressed as a sheep(!) was set on fire on the Voyager directly in front. Amazing what you can hear sitting in 1st in a 170!

I remember hearing about that, wasn't it after a football match or something like that?

Yeah, Hallowe'en '09. Hibs V Aberdeen, I had considered getting that Voyager and changing at the Divit. In the end, I got the Turbostar behind it and got held just before my stop!

I didn't get stopped by the Bobby one breezy winter's morning, but I did fail to get past the platform starter at Stratford P12. I sat there for a goodly little while with no word at all from on high (via the CSR, natch) as first my departure time came and went and then the departure time for the next service also came and went. In all I believe I was there for about 1.5 hours and not a wheel turned anywhere in the vicinity.

It turned out that the brand new Broadgate Tower that was going up next to the Liv St IECC (aka "The Bouncy Castle") had created a bit of a wind-tunnel effect and had blown several years of accumulated dust and other detritus up into the smoke detectors setting off the fire alarms. So while I and all my colleagues sat and looked at red signals all the bobbies were outside on the lawn.
