FTN - WAT ticket validity

Hi guys,

Will be making the journey to London Waterloo from Fratton this Wednesday. Il need to make the outbound trip via a stop off in Winchester for a couple of hours and then return via Guildford.

Would this be possible on a standard FTN - WAT offpeak ticket?

I think so, and its the sort of journey I've done (from Fareham) countless times, though with a stop at Basingstoke.

However, and I may be wrong here, I've always thought that technically you are only valid from the Portsmouth group to London via Winchy/Basingstoke because its a direct train. So if you break and change onto a service from Poole/Weymouth/Exeter you may? not be valid??

I've never had an issue myself (and would not expect one), but it would be interesting to get one of the forum gurus definitive answers.


Also an insight on a similar theme, whether a trip back from Waterloo- Fareham (part of Pmth group) is valid on a Exeter train changing/breaking at Basingstoke, or technically it should be on a direct service. Again the only issue I've ever had was years ago when a guard wouldn't sell me a through WeekendFirst upgrade to Fareham but only to Basingstoke, when on an Exeter service.

Fratton is a member of the Portsmouth Routeing Group.
Portsmouth Group to London Group has maps CW+LB, LP, PD, SW. (page 1555)

Map SW permits travel via Winchester and Basingstoke
Map PD permits travel via Guildford

Unless I'm missing something, one does not need to rely on the direct train rule.

Both the Off-peak Day Return and also the Off Peak return valid for one month do not forbid break of journey.
