FSR First Class Upgrade

Evening all,

Just a quick question, does anyone know how much (if available) an on-board first class upgrade would cost on the 0942 service from Glasgow Queen St -> Aberdeen departing tomorrow - Additionally is it worth it, never travelled first class via FSR before.

Depends on what type of ticket you have. I believe, that if you hold a return ticket it will be half the difference between the first open return (£83.50) and the price of the ticket you already hold. If you have a single ticket, it will be the difference between a first day single (£69.10) and the price of the ticket you already hold. I'm not sure whether advance singles can be excessed in this way. I'm sure somebody with access to the FRPP will be able to confirm or correct this information.

I've got an Advance Single (£10.30) so by the sounds of that prob not worth it!

Upgrades are not normaly avalible with Advance tickets anyway.

Sort of, again I don't know the cost for this case but if you decide to upgrade on the E&G route you are charged the difference between the standard single and the first single. The reason been from what I understand is that you are only upgrading one leg. Beware however as some train staff have different intrepations to the rules then others.

As for is it worth it. Depends what you are looking for. You get a bigger seat and free tea and biscuits. You will also have power points. The 0942 won't be overcrowded so you may get a table all to yourself anyway (something you may no in 1st). You can buy a lot of tea for the price of the upgrade and get a pack of hob-nobs from WHS at Queen Street.

On this subject, I am booking an advanced trip between Inverness and Edinburgh in May, and I am a member of the First ScotRail Loyalty Club, which says you are entitled to free first class upgrades at weekends. Am i likely to get the upgrade with an advanced ticket, with it being a Loyalty Club upgrade, rather than a standard weekend upgrade?

Have e-mailed ScotRail and am awaiting a reply, should one turn up ill let you know!

I would take a copy of some paper evidence stating it can be done. I haven't had a problem on any of the times I have done it in the past year. Advance must be the easiest loyalty scheme on the railways to join!

Yeah I am hoping to get that in an e-mail from ScotRail. When you have used the loyalty card, did you have to upgrade at the ticket office or just plonk yourself in first class and wait for the guard to come round?

I plonked myself in first class and waited for the gaurd to come around. Initially just armed with the printout from the advance website stating about the free first class upgrade (or was it the mailing?) However I have never been asked to produce it, just showed my tickets and asked for an upgrade with the advance card. They have just said that is OK sir. No blank looks or anything.

I geuss if any Scotrail gaurds are reading they will be able to tell you what the policy is, I could have just had some of the more layed back ones.

I am booking for 2 of us with a railcard from Inverness to Edinburgh and a standard advanced ticket is £13.20 for both of us, with a first class ticket coming in at a whopping £70.50, so ill do all I can to take advantage of my Loyalty Card!

With regards to getting a free upgrade to First Class on weekends, I can confirm that this is possible on production of your Advance Membership card. There is no need to visit the booking office but you will be required to show your card to the conductor on the train, and this is only possible on weekend services.

The Weekend First promotion is only valid in conjunction with the following ticket types:
• Anytime
• Anytime Day
• Off-Peak Returns
• Off-Peak Day Returns
• Super Off-Peak Returns

Therefore, you will be unable to upgrade to First Class if you are travelling on an Advance ticket. However, I would also like to advise you that the tickets listed above can also be booked now for travel in May.
