Apparently this message ('Front 2 carriages only for beyond Disley') is given to passengers for the 17.23 Manchester to Buxton. Anyone know why?

It due to platform works taking place at few station after Disley, which means only half the platform are availlable for use. I think it'sNew Mills Newtown and Whaley Bridge.

Just Whaley Bridge

The Platform is being raised, it is a big job and only space for 2 carriages will be available.

a bit of hassle but worth it long term

Thanks Northern Guard. Interesting, I thought it may have something to do with the Whaley Bridge platform work but wazn't sure! Thought they would just tell everyone to alight at rear carriage for Whaley Bridge (where platform is ok) rather than closing off rear 2 carriages...

Even if you tell passengers to alight somewhere chances are alot will not listen then it would mean local door operation only (which is a pain in the proverbial) just as easy to lock a set out of use and alot safer.

Do you think Network Rail / Northern will ever attempt to make the Buxton - Manchester line any quicker? 1 hour for a 25mile journey is not good progress.. I know the gradients on the journey to Buxton are challenging but if TPE/EMT can do MAN-CLY in 25mins (I know its a different line and limited stop) then technically MAN-BUX is feasible in sub 40 mins

its the gradients that do it, going its 59 minutes, back to Manchester we have about 5-7 minutes waiting time at Hazel grove, if it was express then yes but a stopper, not a hope i'm afraid

You may or may not know this but last week (cant remember the day) there was a delayed train from BUX-MAN and they cancelled all stops (or similar) and it did the journey in 42 mins! I think the train had departed Buxton 30mins late on a late afternoon/early evening service... You may be able to find it on your systems!

It's about time they got rid of the waiting time at Hazel Grove on the way back to Manchester...

so i'm right saying it can be done as an Express, The waiting time at Hazel Grove is to benefit the TPE/EMT services.

This fiasco went on for months at Adlington (Lancs) during it's works.

Trying to detrain 6 carriages of passengers through 1 local door and 1 cab door was a disaster.

An express would finish up timetabled as 47 minutes to allow the train to arrive on time even if it gets slightly delayed. Franchised operators don't want lots of 6-7 minute delays making their punctuality figures look bad.

There's also the leaf fall time that gets added in during Autumn, which if conditions are good doesn't get used and the train arrives something like 4 minutes early at Hazel Grove (northbound) or Buxton (southbound.)

Well an express timed at 47mins is no good.. there's a morning peak partial stopper that does the journey in 50mins so I would expect a proper timetabled express to do the journey in 40mins.

I reckon if you could use the freight viaduct at Chapel Milton (after Chinley) you could get the journey time down to 35mins from MAN-BUX.

Detaching a portion (at Disley) in the middle of an AB section would be rather interesting! Running via Chinley isn't practical either - the route doesn't appear to be signalled to passenger standards, and then you've got a reversal in the sidings by the box to get into Buxton station itself (and that move definitely isn't signalled to passenger standards!)

Yes good point, I'd forgotten about the reversal! What they need to do is upgrade the signalling to PAX standard for the viaduct then add a piece of new track near Dove Holes station so that the train can transfer onto the normal Buxton line rather than going down to Peak Dale... then it wouldnt need to reverse!

Once you've put the necessary signalling in for any new junction, I wouldn't imagine you'd have much of a problem with failure to meet passenger standards - the main issues will be through Peak Forest, Great Rocks and obviously the connections at Buxton. However, the significant different in levels around Chapel would make it very difficult to construct a chord up to the LNW (I assume this is what you meant, as the Midland runs in a long tunnel beneath Dove Holes!). Admittedly the Midland would seem to do a better job of serving the major communities - apart from Whaley Bridge, the LNW is rather distant from the places it serves!
