From Bradford to Rotherham

can someone help me with routing.
i had an Anytime return and was travelling from Bradford to Rotherham.
at Leeds station there was a Cross Country train going to Sheffield which stopped at Wakefield Westgate and then Sheffield.
i have used the Cross Country trains many times on this route without a problem.
However this time the Ticket Inspector said my ticket wasn't valid on the train however allowed me to continue my journey and didn't insist on me buying a new ticket.
are tickets to Rotheham not valid via Sheffield then?

No it's not permitted, because you double back Sheffield - Meadowhall.

If the train calls at Meadowhall, you can change there, but you can never go to Sheffield.

What you could do is buy a Bradford - Sheffield Anytime Return, which is the same price, but you must then return via Thurnscoe, which will might be equally inconvenient.

Although in my opinion that route looks reasonable, I don't think it's actually technically valid as it involves doubling back between Rotherham and Sheffield.

I've had a very quick look at the easements file and can't find any that would be helpful here either.

Well I don't think you can go via Thurnscoe to Meadowhall on a train that doesn't call at Rotherham, so that shouldn't be a problem.
