Hi,

I'm struggling finding the correct (well cheapest fare) between frodsham and liverpool.

when i search on line i get the message

The Multiple Ticket symbol shows that more than 1 ticket is needed for this journey.

The fare from Frodsham to Liverpool is £5.20 Off-peak day return (£6.70 anytime day return). It is likely that the journey planners are routeing you via Earlestown, this is not a valid route.

Frodsham has routeing points of Chester, Hooton and Runcorn. Liverpool is a routeing point. Valid maps for your journey are LC (Runcorn), ML (Runcorn or Chester), CP (Hooton or Chester), CH (Chester) and CL+ML (Chester). Although CL+ML appears to cover you to Earlestown, you would, in effect, be doublebacking through Helsby and so it is not allowed.

Just buy Chester to Liverpool return ANY PERMITTED priced at £4.40 off peak/ £6.15 peak.

Valid via Runcorn, Chester and Warrington.

You should probably go Frodsham-Earlestown then Earlestown-Liverpool. The fare is valid, NRES confirms this.

Also this may help some people:

"Journeys via or from Frodsham to stations between and including Hooton and Birkenhead Hamilton Square may go via Chester. This easement applies in both directions."

Now I'm really confused.

So I can get a ticket from chester to liverpool return but get on at frodsham?

My wife currently goes from frodsham to earlstown and the ticket costs a lot more than this, could she also do this.

Some of the fares on this thread are wrong.
Frodsham - Liverpool is £7.10 / £5.40 off-peak (both day returns)
Chester - Liverpool is £8.80 / £8.10 off-peak route Warrington, £8.90/£8.50 route Any Permitted, £6.20/£4.40 route Birkenhead.

Routing points for Frodsham are Chester, Hooton and Runcorn. Chester fails the fares check so we have to use Hooton or Runcorn. Runcorn doesn't make sense as there are no trains Frodsham - Runcorn (main) and going Runcorn East - Runcorn is a joke. So Hooton is the only one that makes sense. BUT the easement means you can in fact go via Chester on this journey, so buy a Frodsham - Liverpool ticket and go via Chester.

My Avantix Traveller gives £8.50 CDR Chester-Liverpool route Any Permitted, yet Liverpool-Chester £4.40 CDR route Any Permitted! Yet the online journey planners still offer £4.40 fares for the latter journey. Can anyone explain?

Indeed, it appears as though I was too hasty in posting and got things wrong, that teach me for trying to be quick! The fare I quoted before is infact the Runcorn to Liverpool fare, apologises for any inconvenience caused.

The FRPP (Fares and Retail Publication Portal) states that the £4.40 return fare from Chester is 'Route Birkenhead' not 'Any Permitted' (I hadn't checked this previously, which I should have). The 'Any Permitted' fare from Chester is £8.90 Anytime day return or £8.50 Off-peak day return. The 'Route Warrington' fare is £8.80 Anytime day return or £8.10 Off-peak day return. Both these fares are set by Arriva Trains Wales.

So, the Chester to Liverpool fares listed as 'Route Warrington' and 'Any Permitted' (because the 'Route Warrington' fare is cheaper) are valid for travel via Warrington. However the Frodsham to Liverpool 'Any Permitted' fare is not valid via Warrington.

Which basically means, if you are going from Frodsham to Liverpool via Warrington, you are best off with a Chester to Liverpool 'Route Warrington' fare (£8.80/£8.10), if you are going via Hooton, you are best off with the Frodsham to Liverpool fare (£7.10/£5.40).

Can't say why its like that, it just is. Don't know why the journey planners are having problems though, possibly the programmer/data entry people assuming all fares are the same in opposite directions.
