Frinton on sea platform 2

Hello, I went to Frinton on Sea station recently and it got me thinking when platform 2 was decomissioned.

The bridge has heavily weathered and faded NSE red handrails and the OHLE spanning both platforms.

Info would be greatly appreciated

I think it was decommissioned in 1959 upon electrification. Presumably the entire branch from Thorpe-le-Soken was singled at the time

If you look closely at Thorpe-le-Soken, there are still the original concrete posts and lamps on the disused platform

I worked that crossing and some others for a few years leaving, in 2008. I forgot how moronic that situation and the residents were/are.

The loop at Frinton serving platform 2 was wired at electrification in 1959
Not sure when the loop was removed, 1970s possibly.

I have seen a signalling plan for 1950 which shows that the down loop and signal box could be switched out and down trains using the up platform if need be thus the signal box could change to a gate cabin ie non block post. As the line was already at that time worked by acceptance switches ( no tokens ) removal of the down loop in later years was easy but I will try and find out when.

Brilliant! Harry Hill did a spot on this in that week’s “TV Burp” - I wish I had a copy of that.

Perhaps little known is that the local ‘protest’ group had arranged to do a protest at the crossing on the day that the gates were to be removed over the commissioning weekend. Naturally this became known to the project, who sent out the gate removal guys in the small hours of that morning. When the protesters turned up, having had a nice breakfast, the gates had already gone.
