I know this is a bit late, being at the end of Freshers Week, but are there any members of this forum currently at uni?

Just for the record, I'm at Exeter Uni, doing BA History, and would like to meet any fellow railway enthusiasts there.

I've had freshers...

And I dislike Uni already. The lack of money to buy my books and materials etc isn't helping me much though either =/

Freshers week? Had no idea we had so many Americans on this forum :D. Are you all looking forward to prom night? All of the hot chicks will be dating a Jock anyway, so you'll be left with the fugly ones. Can't think of anymore American rubbish to put in this, but suffice to say, I have no idea why we're so keen to be America? Especially those in further education, it's a step backwards

Rubbish! America's a far better place than this excuse of a 'country' that we live in!

You wouldn't be saying that if you were suffering their credit crunch, out of work then you broke your leg in an accident and had to pay to have it fixed. Land of the free? Utter crap, people here need to realise it's not like being in the OC or American Pie

it was called freshers week when I went to uni in 1978, so nowt new.
Indeed, it's always been called "Freshers' Week" as far as I'm aware, certaintly for the past 30 years at least.

it's better when you're a freshers' week helper (i.e. second year), we got free beer for having to put up with the freshers

Colleges don't tend to have freshers weeks I don't think. Fairly sure it's just universities.

Besides, if you think 'Freshers' Week' as an American term is bad for universities - why do so many of them insist on calling holidays 'vacations'? I have a Christmas vacation, an Easter vacation, and a Summer vacation...

Most colleges in this area seem to have orientation weeks, where they go and get all the admin stuff done, but no-one I've met has a Freshers' Week. Probably because there's not a union at most colleges, though.

Dan, I have vacations. I also have "semesters" due to the Uni's new policy on Americanization (sic). It's actually screwed up my course big time, with a block of study being split over Christmas and another being split over Easter  We also have terms. Term 1 is semester 1, and Terms 2 and 3 (split by Easter) are semester 2.

Sounds all too familiar... the fact a semester is split over Xmas is stupid - 10 weeks this side of the vacation, two the other side, then exams! The Easter one is normally smack bang in the middle of the semester, which isn't so bad.

Our terms are defined by the vacations. Semester 1 is split over Terms 1 and 2, Semester 2 over the rest of 2, and 3. Apparently both semesters and terms are needed for administration purposes rather than dropping the terms (which bear no relevance to the course).

Then again, that affects all 25000 students here rather than just me.
