Kew railway bridge engineering work to help improve reliability for passengers

Network Rail is set to carry out track work on a Grade II listed bridge over the River Thames between Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury stations during four weekends from September to October.

Elsewhere along this stretch of line, teams will be taking the chance to deliver additional targeted maintenance at the same time as the bridge works, including:

• Improving train detection systems
• Replacing points (which allow trains to change tracks) at Gunnersbury and Richmond
• Upgrading signals at Richmond
• Cutting back vegetation to improve signal sighting for train drivers, reduce the likelihood of flooding at Gunnersbury and lower the risk of obstructions on the line

How many more loss of signalling faults can this little section take before something more serious is done about it.

Funny you should ask that, as I spotted an article on the BBC warning of disruption due to closures and repairs over the next couple of months.

The London Overground and District line are set to be partially closed over four weekends in September and October, as work commences on repairing Kew Railway Bridge in south-west London.

Network Rail will replace part of the Grade II-listed bridge over the River Thames between Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury stations during the work.

More than 570 wheel timbers that are 25 years old and in poor condition will be replaced by engineers.

Network Rail hopes the replacement of the wheel timbers will improve train reliability for passengers as the existing ones cause track faults, leading to delays.

Line shut again this morning Turnham Green - Richmond. They literally closed the line for the weekend to fix this!

I wonder if there are any statistics about signal failures on the Richmond branch compared to the rest of the District line?
