I had the fortune to be in northern France this week and took the opportunity to see if I could see my last two 58s for sight at Alizay.

The photos that follow are not great, but show the 23 that are in two rows at the back of the yard (there were two ECR / ex-EWS 66s stabled there too).

Based on this excellent old post (post 3) from 2017, it agrees that there are 23 there (including the two I needed, hooray!):

However, wnxx lists 24 in France. Does anyone know where 58044 is?

Are these now essentially awaiting scrapping? Or do the French indulge in the same habit that we do, and leave locos sat awaiting their fate for decades?!

The Wikipedia entry for the class suggests it is at Metz.

D’oh, one place I didn’t check! Thank you

Lovely shots but they look absolutely knackered. Such a shame.
Having looked at a few photos of them in these lines over the past few years, they definitely look like they are deteriorating in situ!

Great pics, are these all viewable from public land outside the yard? I.e. could I just drive up and see them?

Thank you.

There are two public vantage points for the depot. The first is at the entrance - everything locked up when I went but I could see the 66 stabled at this end - you can’t see the 58s.

The second is at the back of the depot - the nearby public road is the D508. There’s then a drive that is not tarmaced (open, unrestricted access), called ‘Le Grand Parc’ on Google maps. This leads to what looks like an electricity substation, all fenced off appropriately. Walking up that road, you walk past an old depot entrance where a couple of demic shunters are stood, and then the 58s are all visible from outside the depot fence. You’ll also see any 66s stabled at this end of the depot.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much, found the turning off the D508, did you just park on the gravel at the top of the untarmaced drive?

Yes - it’s got enough room to pull off and walk up from there. I wouldn’t risk the car tyres on the untarmaced road!
