Hello,

I'm looking for data regarding freight's length and order of the freight's wagons. I understand that this data can't be access unless using TOPS.
Hence I'm wondering how can I gain access to TOPS to get these data?

thank you in advance,

The simple answer to your question is you can't. TOPS is an industry internal system accessible only to those staff who need it. While we live in an era of increasingly open data the information you are looking for can't really be said to have any significant weight of public interest needing it to be opened up.

Thank you for your reply.
Are there other way I can get data for freight's length and order of the freight's wagons without access to TOPS though? or if I am already working for a train company, can the company get access to TOPS?

If you work for a train company, you will have access to the tools you need to do your job. They won't give you TOPS access unless you need it for your role.

In addition to the above answers, it may help to know why you want / need the information. Someone may be able to point you in the correct direction.

How to get access to TOPS? Get a job on the railway.

Otherwise I'm sure some wagon spotters forum would have the info, there used to be a website with lots of wagon info on it, but it seems to have gone now.

I'm sure there's some enthusiasts out there that could tell you how many pairs of megafrets are on a Coatbridge-Daventry, and possibly even the running numbers (although they're rarely readable anyway).
But no non-industry TOPS access for you I'm afraid.
Not sure if subscribing to Mark's (@Freightmaster) site might help provide some of this info.....maybe he'll post on here in due course.

They're asking me to get freight train wagons length and order number but I don't have access to TOPS. And so right now I'm clueless of what to do next. The company I work for is not an operator company but a train parts company so maybe that's why they don't have access to TOPS.

A "train parts" company would already know the information you need, or would be able to obtain it from their business partners.
What is the real reason you need this? Are you trying to identify specific cargoes?

We're trying to get more context data for the cargo monitoring system we have fitted on the cargo trains, to be able to provide better analysis. I'm just an intern ;(((

You may not be aware that most freight operators can fairly easily track their trains thought their own and NR systems hence possibly don't feel the need to be that helpful to 3rd cargo party trackings/monitoring (e.g. for containers) if there is no direct commercial relationship?
There tends to be significant "facepalm" when container tracking/monitoring companies (there have been many) try to sell their services to the rail freight operators who regard it as unnecessary as there are already other ways of tracking with existing back office systems.
If you have a commercial relationship with the FOCs you can ask them for the data via non-TOPS methods.

We often deal with live breakdown cases, so historical consist data isn’t useful for what we’re doing - which is why we were looking into TOPS access. Even though we have a commercial relationship with the freight operator, they unfortunately can’t provide the consist data live, which is the main limitation we’re trying to solve. This is a new project, and I don’t think anyone on our side currently has TOPS access, so we’ll try reaching out to Network Rail. Thanks for the help!

What you want is available but you will need to talk to a freight operator to try and arrange this for you. You need the TOPS consist feed through TD.net.
