Hi, Slight unusual one here but it do regards Freightliner.Can any one who works out of Ipswich Freightliner depot as a Driver,would you be kind enough to PM me please.

PS I wish you all well out there who are looking to become Train Drivers if you fall at first hurdle don't give up.There are opportunities out there

Arh right. Sorry can't not give that info out I'm afraid, but the DSM's do not have anything to do with the trainee drivers.

They will only start taking a interest when they have passed out with all their Rules and Regs...At the moment Ipswich have taken on more Intermodal Trainees which have just started a course, I think they may have another intake in March or May...not sure.

At the moment we are nearly full up with drivers and trainees. Ipswich is a very young depot now and not many people will be leaving in the future.

Tilbury have just taken the one on.

If you want to get in at Freightliner Intermodal, the best idea is to look for jobs within the company, like shunters jobs at Felixstowe. These are the guys that get the first pop at applying for driver jobs.

Heavy Haul....I'm not sure, but I think they are full up at Daggy Dock, they took on 3 at the start of the year.

The other option is to go for a trainees job with Freightliner somewhere else and after 2 years put a transfer in.

Unfortunately I don't know you, so I can't give out any numbers, so apologies.

Not sure what the best is really. If you are Qualified, you should be able to speak to someone in the industry...If you are a ASLEF member, look up the LDC reps, they will give you the info you need.

HR will not really help you.

Ok...You will need at least 5 years mainline driving, unless they have change it.

Yourself being a trainee and I'm being quite straight here, I don't think you will have a chance at the moment. They like drivers who have some sort of route knowledge of the routes they go over. West Coast, East Coast, Anglia and North London Lines, which will normally help.

I take it your a trainee Pax driver. Even though they sort of take on Pax drivers, it's normally rare unless your in the know.

The Ex Pax drivers which have come into Ipswich over the years are ex Ipswich secondmen. But saying that Tilbury have took a few over the years.

If your a trainee Freight driver, you would at least need a few years behind you before coming to Freightliner, also they may probably waver the 5 years.

Ipswich is pretty full up at the moment and have a few more Trainees coming in..Like I said on a previous post, Ipswich is a young mans depot now and few will retire. Also drivers can stay on beyond 65 which will make it more difficult.

Never give up, if freight is what you want. My option would be to finish what you are doing now, get a few years under you belt.....Then apply.
I would also look at other freight company's around the UK, don't pin your hopes on one depot. Also if you do get into Freightliner Intermodal/Heavy Haul, you can transfer if a job comes up in another location, after 2 years (I think).

No harm in finding out how it all works - then you can work out your options. I'm sure many have aspirations to move elsewhere at a later date. Just get your 2 years PQA done first...

I'd concentrate on your training at the moment, never take anything for granted, you could be downed at any time.
