Hi there chaps.

I've tried my best to search for the answer to this question, but it's a little harder than it sounds when you're new to every phrase / abbreviation to do with railways and careers! So do excuse me if it's been done to death already.

I am currently waiting on both Freightliner and Northern applications. So far I've been successful with both, with an invite for the FL test day & I'm waiting to hear back from Northern having passed the online visual comparison test.

What I am trying to work out is:

If I go to and hopefully pass the selection at Freightliner, will this mean I can not apply for Northern at the same time due to the testing? I gather it can only be done once every 6 months, but can the same test be used for both operators in two different applications?

I'm guessing in the near future I will have to choose between FL and Northern?

If anyone could give me any advice that'd be great,

Thanks,

I've asked a similar question of Freightliner. I'm going to an assessment day, but I've passed many of the tests with another company within the last 6 months. It seems that Freightliner are deliberating on whether tests taken elswhere will count for them. If they decide not, I don't know where I'll stand, because I shouldn't be retaking them within 6 months...

As for other companies, I believe each have their own policy. Some will accept your passes, and others won't.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I would expect that Northern would accept good passes so long as you took and passed all of the elements they require. Fail anything and it is the six month wait.

Added to this if Freightliner did not require a certain element and Northern did, I suspect that Northern would not retest you on just that one as they expect you complete the whole assessment, similarly if you take an additional test for Freightliner which Northern do not require and fail, you would still not be able to resit the test for six months as DBS will not retest you and Northern require the whole assessment passing.

They cannot expect you to do that. Management are also adult enough to realise, that you will likely be chasing any trainee positions that come up.

Keep both applications live, until you have a contract and start date in your hand, from the one you most want to work for.

Be professional, and communicate with the respective recruitment people, about any tests that you have already sat, and what the outcomes were. They are well used to this.

Best of luck to you.
