As GB said, you will get a definitive answer from the FOC/TOC concerned. However, the general rule of thumb, is that you are not allowed to take an assessment if you have already taken one within the 6 months previous. If you have passed the psychometrics, it it usually valid for up to 5 years, but it can vary depending on who the FOC/TOC is. The new test has a simple pass or fail marking system at the moment, but there are certain FOC's/TOC's that choose to use and 'enhanced test' requiring a higher pass mark. For example FTPE. Unfortunately, you will only find out once the TOC/FOC checks with OPC, or whoever administered the tests, whether your test score is accepted or not. So, if you took a 'standard' test and you are required to sit an 'enhanced', you have to wait until after the 6 months is up. The scores you achieved are irrelevant, even if they would have passed the 'enhanced' test, as, allegedly, they are unable to check if your scores would have passed. Sounds ludicrous, but this actually happened to me last month when I applied for a Trainee position with FTPE after passing an assessment with Northern a month previous. Hope that helps.

It is just the way it is I'm afraid. If you search the forum re: Freightliner vacancies, you will the earlier posts in the threads littered with people having the same difficulties. Just grin and bare it I'm afraid. Plenty of coffee and 4 x more time set aside then you thought to do the online application. Good luck.

What happened on the last intake of trainees was a major clanger was dropped, the trainees were placed everywhere but the location that needed them most which was up in the north east, Newcastle way, so I would say the majority of this intake will be up that way.

FL seem to have a lot of NDS work at the virtual quarry (VQ) based at Tyne Yard just south of Newcastle - I'd guess that's the reason for this current campaign.

As Jambo has said - some of the best paid and most lucrative contracts from Network Rail.

GBRf are just about to start 'tripping' work from Tyne to Millerhill / Mossend, DBS run the yard and work a lot of the TIII possessions and FL are well established with the HOBC trains.
After years of stagnation it's now a hive of activity (still nowhere near its peak in the early 70's though).


Rob d2, looks like you don't achieve full pay until all training is completed (including route and traction knowledge) so you're looking at 12-18 months in total.
£18K is quite a low figure so I imagine it could put off a lot of applicants.

Gents depending on the location and workload, one of my trainees has completed training in less than 12 months start to finish. You earn the top rate from the day you drive your first productive train....

Heavy haul are also very short of minder drivers, so from start to finish could be a long time. I think it will be a case of sharing a minder getting your traction handling in, believe that's now something like 250 hrs instead of 150. And it ain't much good been sat on that HOBC all week as you will barely get any driving in, maybe a few taking it to site but once there the train drives itself. Best job in the world for the rear driver!

So from all this post then, training 12 to 18 months, training could be at crew and ferrybridge starting wage is 18k and for me locations in north east, doncaster leeds drop into north east? Normaly yorks n humber.
Work is nights and weekends 35hrs per week roughly.

One thing i keep forgetting to ask is career progression. So from a train driver, where do you go from their? Driver instuctor? Then onto what?

The north east depot would be Tyne yard newcastle. Shifts are not just nights its everything, earlies, days, afternoons, nights, work is spread out in the link so as you cover it all in addition to your rest days. As for career progression then apart from a minder driver then I wouldn't say there really is any at HH. A quick question to qualified freight drivers, how many years experience is it roughly to to be considered for minder driver? I am sure a few years ago i read it was a minimum 5 year mainline driving experience? Could be wrong tho

They seem to be relying on people on low wages now who can withstand the year and then jump to 40k plus,

If your on similar cash now, I think anyone would struggle to survive a year
